Natural solutions for the treatment of severe anxiety disorder.

Alternative Solutions To Psychiatric Medications

Just this past fall my 11 year old was diagnosed with Severe Anxiety Disorder. She was presenting with both social phobia and agoraphobia. Prior to her diagnosis, she had been a normal, well-adjusted child who was outgoing with a very sunny disposition, so when I was informed of her condition, I was devastated.

Her attending psychiatrist had prescribed Prozac, an anti-depressant for her condition. She was on it for a month and a half, waiting for the effects to kick in, but that never happened, if anything it made her feel worse and caused her to lose control of her bladder. Turns out constant urination is a side effect. When I asked why they were prescribing an anti-depressant for an anxiety disorder they told me that she was too young for anti-anxiety medications and they did not generally prescribe "potentially addictive medications" to children. They took her off the Prozac and set her up with "talk therapy", which required she leave her comfort zone (home) to go to appointments. At this point I became very angry because they were trying to force an agoraphobic child into highly stressful situations.

It was at this point I decided to take matters into my own hands and began doing research on alternative solutions that would address her medication issues. I was pretty sure that there was something out there that would help her without all the risks and side effects. Desperate for answers, I posted a specific question on my status at Facebook. A few hours later I got an answer: Valerian Root.

Naturally, I wanted to research it before giving it to my child and what I learned both fascinated me and gave me great hope and comfort. As it turns out, aside from being used to treat insomnia, Valerian Root has also been used for years in the treatment of Severe Anxiety Disorders. An hour after I discovered this, I had a bottle of Valerian Root Drops in my hand.

The following morning, I placed 28 drops in my daughter's strawberry milk. I didn't tell her about it, I just gave it to her. The results were immediate! I'm not saying that it cured her of her SAD, but for the first time in almost a year my beautiful little girl was laughing and playing and she was calm. Finally she was stable enough for me to move forward with finding her a home therapist, getting her settled into cyber school and trying to re-establish a sense of safety and security for her at home.

There is only one down side to Valerian Root. It smells and tastes god awful. The only way to tolerate it enough to take it is to mix it into something that will cover up the odor and the taste. This is an easy enough fix, it can be mixed with anything. I've added it to fruit juices, chocolate milk, strawberry milk and even soda. Save for that one issue, the benefits of using this all natural remedy are many...

Since beginning her on the Valerian Root regiment she has calmed down enough to deal with the fears that are indicative of her SAD and take part in her own healing. You can say that Valerian Root has restored a portion of her piece of mind as well as mine.
In fact, I had begun using it as well not long after witnessing it's effectiveness with my child and now that we are both calm and focused, we can get an even better grasp on her SAD to either find a more permanent solution or rid her of it altogether.

If you are interested in beginning a Valerian Root regiment and are under the care of a professional, please consult with them before changing, adding or stopping any medications you are already on. Valerian Root cannot be taken by patients on most psychiatric medications due to drug incompatibility.

For you and I it is a gradual build, due to our size. For a mere child is does not take as long. Thanks for reading!

Very useful share, Mary. I avoid taking allopathic drugs as far as possible preferring my body to do the healing by itself - it is the best pharmacy! siva

Sivaramakrishnan A: Thanks for reading! I agree the best healing is self-healing, however the discipline that requires cannot be expected of children as they are not that in tune as adults. What made me turn to homeopathic remedies was the fact that my child was experiencing multiple severe anxiety attacks on a daily basis. She was suffering. As a mother, I have a duty to alleviate the suffering in any way I find reasonable and the medical profession did very little, if anything to help her. I do not agree with the use of prescription drugs and prefer to take a more natural approach and since Valerian Root is not a drug-it was an obvious choice.
