Hot flashes affect many women before and during menopause. Discover some natural remedies that can help with this annoying occurrence and bring relief.

Hot Flashes

Hot flashes are very uncomfortable and very common. They start with a sudden intense feeling of heat which spreads over your face, neck chest and nape of the neck. The sweating can be profuse as your body tries to cool itself down. The blood vessels have been dilated due to a drop in your estrogen levels and the cause is believed that the hypothalamus, the body's master thermostat of the brain overreacts. These symptoms often occur during the early onset of menopause.

Anger, anxiety, excitement, and stress can set off hot flashes as well as activities in a warm environment, physical work, and eating or drinking of hot foods. Any one of these occurrences can affect the hypothalamus and bring on a hot flash.

What can help

To help control these hot flashes these "power surges". Diet, exercise, and natural herbal remedies will help deal with them. By avoiding alcohol and caffeine and including a healthy diet will reduce the hot flashes. By including flaxseed oil, soy and high fiber foods into your diet will help greatly with controlling the hot flashes.

Vitamin E helps improve the strength of your blood vessels and can prevent them from dilating when your estrogen levels begin to fall.

Vitamin B is essential to helping the hot flashes; this vitamin helps to relieve stress as well.

Soy beans are extremely helpful because they balance estrogen levels so that your hot flashes are few. Try to incorporate them in your diet.

Natural remedies

Natural herbal remedies are also very effective in dealing with hot flashes. There are supplements and medicinal teas, which help balance the estrogen levels in your body. Since stress, anxiety, and anger can trigger a hot flash taking a calming herb such as: Chaste tree, Fennel, or sarsaparilla -these herbs are all very effective in reducing the rate and how frequent the hot flashes may occur.

Passion flower, Kava Kava, and lavender can be helpful also; these herbs have a calming effect on the nervous system and can reduce the onset of a hot flash.

Black Cohosh- reduces hot flashes as well as Vitex berries, Dong qua root, and ginseng root.

Medicinal teas: St John's Worth, Alfalfa leaves, Chamomile, Lady's mantle, lemon balm and sage helps with hot flashes. Some can be bought loose and some are in tea bag form.

For anxiety: try passion flower, licorice, and peppermint. This will provide a calm soothing effect. Drink them when needed.

For any muscle tension: Kava Kava is extremely helpful dealing with tension and the hot flashes.

Aromatherapy- can help some women cope with the emotional effects of hot flashes. These essential oils can help provide relief from the anxiety, and tension that hot flashes cause. These oils have been known to curb the frequency of the hot flashes. Rose, sandalwood, and clary sage: Wet a damp cloth and place a few drops on the cloth and inhale. Use it as often as needed to bring relief.
