The Ebola virus was first discovered in 1976 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since then, according to the WHO, there were 15 epidemics in African countries.

How Ebola Virus Name Found?

More than 1,300 people died from the virus. Current epidemic occurred in Guinea, earlier in 2012 in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ebola virus, which causes outbreaks in West Africa have been discovered about 38 years ago. When the virus is causing by a mysterious disease among the villagers in Zaire, which is now called the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In 1976 the International team of scientists commissioned to investigate surprised to see viruses and diseases was arise thereafter. At that time, Dr. Peter Piot, one of the inventors of the virus writes in his memoirs, "Do not wasted times, life's focus to quickly and find out this deadly virus." Scientists have seen the blood samples were sent from Africa under a microscope in a laboratory in Belgium, and looks like a worm or virus which long strings, unlike almost all known viruses. And after the team got soil samples in Zaire, they see how quickly the virus is able to spread and kill their victims. They know that a possible epidemic must be stopped.

The story of how was the Ebola virus name obtained is still very random till nowadays. However, based on anonymous information that it was an evening in Kentucky, USA, a group of Scientists got together and agreed to be given a name to this new virus.

Virus Name Debate

This virus is found in a village called "Yambuku", so most Scientists believe can be named according to the name of that village. It was stated by one of the team, Dr. Pierre Sureau, from the "Pasteur Institute in France".

But another expert, Dr. Joel Breman, from the "Center for Disease Control and Prevention" (CDC) states, naming a virus such as the name of the village will give a negative stigma in the village “Yambuku”. It's never happened before, for example, in the case of Lassa virus, which emerged in the town of Lassa in Nigeria in 1969.

Other researchers from the CDC and the leader of the research team, Karl Johnson suggested naming a virus according to the name of a river in the local area.

One option that will be dropped is the Congo River, the deepest river in the world and flows through the Congo State and a very rich rain forest. But the thing is that there are other viruses are already using the name of "Congo", for example; Crimean Congo which one of hemorrhagic fever virus.

Then the Scientists see a small map, which is affixed to the wall, to see each other rivers near "Yambuku". On the map, it is nearest a river to Yambuku is Ebola River, which means "Black River," from a local language "Lingala".

Finally, after the day to set Ebola, as the name of the new virus.

Viruses Named take from their Origin Place

Many other viruses have been named after their place of origin, including West Nile virus was found in 1937, was found in 1948 "Coxsackie" virus (Coxsackie is a town in New York), "Marburg" virus was found in 1967 (Marburg is a city in Germany), and "Hendra" virus (Hendra is a suburb of Brisbane, Australia

This tradition continues today. Last year, after months referred to by several names, corona virus finally got its official name, the Middle East respiratory syndrome corona virus, abbreviated as the "Middle East respiratory syndrome corona virus" or Mers-CoV.

Thank you for sharing this information. We've got a nightmare going on in Cleveland with ebola. I'm not sure what is going on but I know they've closed schools. There are also people in quarantine.
