How do I handle my depression?

Handling depression can sometimes be depressing. When you're depressed the tendency of handling your situation can be more depressing.

Overview.

Depression if not handled well can lead to more depression. It's the root cause of about 90% of all reported cases of suicide. If you are already in it or almost becoming a victim of it stay with me on this page. I'll talk about how you can effectively manage depression to your advantage. One major issue is that when you are depressed, people around you get affected; it can affect your entire environment.

People who cause suicide as a result of depression tend to "lock their inner self up." By letting your inner self out you'll be in a better position to deal with your depression. Walk out of your depression and not out of the world.

causes.

The actual cause of depression is not the problem presented before us but what we think of ourselves. One who underestimates his or her ability feels more depressed than the one who makes an effort to celebrate those little successes.

A lot of factors can trigger this negative feeling. I may not want to go deep into each of them but will try and highlight a few. Abuse(verbal or physical), certain prescribed medication(eg: beta-blockers or reserpine used in the treatment of high blood pressure), genetic, substance abuse and the list goes unexhausted, can trigger this negative feeling in people.

Managing depression.

Depression can be both prevented and cured. The curing process may be fast or slow depending on the individual's condition. Since it basically affects our mindset a person who is deep into it will take quiet a longer period to come out than one who is not so deep in it.

You may consider the these basic steps in dealing positively with depression:

1) Learn more about it by researching. Research has shown that people who are better educated about their disease are more likely to have a successful outcome.

2) Follow your treatment plan as given by you doctor.

3) Try to break difficult task into smaller tasks. You don't need the stress as the brained is already stressed.

4) Diffuse that feeling that is making act the way you do and participate in the activities you love most.

5) Try to confide in someone you trust.

6) Concentrate on being healthy by exercising.

7) Know that it will not take a day to snap out of your dressing mood. Always keep in mind that positive thinking will replace the negative thoughts. Make an effort to have more positive thoughts each which will help you come out of your depressed mood.

Depression is becoming common especially due to present lifestyles where one can hardly take a real break. When everyone seems pre-occupied with their "own thing", the concept of family and society fails. And city life is a slow killer, but faster than life in the country side! Well written - siva

Praying could be one way to relieve depression, apart from meditation. Thank you for writing on this.

LadyQueen, good article on depression. Depression has been a theme of many plays that I've written. Especially depression among women, who they say are more apt to be depressed than men. Had a bad week of depression myself recently; but it had more to do with my sinus infections than my mental outlook.
Which reminds me, Silvia Plath committed suicide during the time she was sick with sinus headaches. They said if she'd just waited a few more days when she was feeling better she may not have committed suicide. Sorry, to run on----good writing, deserving of a Star page.
