Diabetes can affect your eye vision if you do not take care. Knowing how to take care of your eyes when you have diabetes will help to save your eyesight. Controlling blood sugar levels is the key to diabetic eye care.

How does diabetes affect eye vision?

Diabetes can affect the eyesight. High blood sugar affects eye vision and the eyesight may become blurry. When the blood sugar levels are very high the lens in the eyes swell up and the eyes will not be able to focus properly leading to blurry vision.

To correct blurry eye vision blood sugar must be brought under control.

Diabetes can cause the following eye conditions - Cataract, Glaucoma, Retinopathy

Cataract

Cataract is an eye condition in which the vision becomes blurry due to clouding or fogging of the eye lens. When the lens of the eye becomes cloudy or foggy the eye will not be able to focus light on the clouded area resulting in blurry vision. During a cataract operation the cloudy lens is removed and a synthetically made lens is inserted into the eye.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition that affects the eyes when the fluid inside the eyes does not drain properly. When the fluid inside the eye does not drain properly, the pressure increases and damages the nerves and blood vessels. When the nerves and blood vessels of the eye are damaged eyesight is affected and becomes blurry.

Retinopathy

Retinopathy is a condition in which the small blood vessels that supply blood to the retina are damaged. Retinopathy can be treated in the early stages by laser surgery.

If you have diabetes check your eyes regularly with an opthamologist, at least once in six months to prevent loss of eye vision. Follow a healthy diet, exercise regularly and keep blood sugar levels in control.
