We all know just how much the summer months can test your resolve to exercise. Here are some of my top tips to ensure that you commit to a dedicated fitness regime and avoid the temptation of a quick trip to the pub with friends.

I am sure that many of you, like me, struggle to keep up the motivation to keep fit during this time of year. The sun is shining and your friends are all out drinking and sampling the delicious food on offer in the various restaurants and pubs around you. I know it seems that things couldn’t get much worse but they are also topping up their tans as well!

With more and more arguments in support of a fat tax to tackle the obesity problem in the UK, there has never been a better time to make a committed promise to yourself to improve your exercise regime.
If you are like me and live by the sea, you will understand how difficult it is to get yourself down the gym or out pounding the pavements when your friends are sending you selfies of themselves playing with their kids on the beach. The need for parent’s to exercise seems to have become even more crucial with recent reports suggesting that being a parent can be bad for your waistline.

So, how can you make sure that you are motivated to put down that glass of prosecco and get yourself down the gym? Here are my top tips to keep yourself in shape all-year round.

Find Your Inner Motivator

One method that I have found to be particularly effective is to get in touch with your inner Mr Motivator and grab hold of him with both hands! This can be in a variety of ways, maybe you are motivated by seeing the progress that you have by looking at pictures of yourself? Try to think of the gym as your friend; would you ever let down a friend time and time again? No, of course not, so why do it to yourself and the gym?

Keep an Eye on Your Exercise Clothing

If you find that the first thing to cross your mind each morning is your husband’s snoring, then I am sorry, but I can’t help you. However, if it is turning over your pillow and going back to sleep then I can certainly try!

Try to ensure that your workout clothes are next to you when you wake up. If the first thing you see each morning is your workout clothes then you are more likely to feel guilty and motivate yourself to exercise. If you really are struggling to get yourself into gear then it is worth considering purchasing some new sports and fitness clothing in order to kick-start your lagging motivation. A new pair pf joggers or runners could quickly get you into a daily exercise routine.

Exercise with a Friend

This method is one of the most simple but also one of the most effective. Having a friend get fit with you really will push you in more ways than you can imagine and ensure that there is someone there to give you that extra little piece of motivation when you most need it.

We all know then when the evening comes the last place we want to be is the gym. However when you have a friend to encourage you to go and burn a sweat it suddenly becomes a lot easier. Make sure that you let your friend know when you are feeling low and need a bit of gentle encouragement. You also need to make sure that you are there for your friend as well when they need encouragement.

Turn Your Commute into a Workout

If you find that there are simply not enough hours in the day for you to squeeze in some exercise, why not turn your morning commute into a workout? More and more workplaces are now offering their staff facilities to get changed or have a shower when they arrive at work, so why not take advantage? You will probably also get home faster than using the bus as well!

These are just a few ideas to get you on the way to improving your levels of motivation and commitment to a dedicated exercise regime that you can incorporate into your day to day life. There will be times that you are tempted to head down the beach with your friends or have that cheeky glass of prosecco, but don’t give into that little devil on your shoulder and vow to stop letting yourself down once and for all!
