Having a bad breath is embarrassing. How your mouth smells can make or break you as a person. A good smelling breath can be your ladder to success and your dreams but all of these can be denied with a foul smelling breath. Here are the causes and some tips how to prevent it.

Good oral hygiene

Bad breath can be observed when a person speaks or exhales.

Bad breath or Halitosis is usually caused by bacteria that act on food left in our mouth. Having this condition is often more embarrassing than harmful. We can easily prevent having bad breath with good oral hygiene.

There are other causes of bad breath and may be serious like liver, kidney, digestive and respiratory disorders. It can also be due to sinusitis. All of these may need medical attention. Kidney disorders make our breath smell like urine; liver disorders gives out a mousy odor; and diabetes can make our breath smell like ‘acetone.’

Common Causes

1. Poor oral hygiene. Flossing and brushing improperly may leave food particles on and in between the teeth, bridges or jacket crowns.

2. Morning bad breath. Bad smells accumulate in the mouth while a person sleeps.

3. Gum disease.

4. Tooth decay and abscess. Plaque builds up in our teeth.

5. Smoking.

6. Sinusitis.

7. Some food causes bad breath. Food like garlic, coffee, cheese, onions, vegetables, meat, etc.

8. Some medicines. Medications like diuretics, tranquilizers, antihistamines, etc.

Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly and thoroughly can prevent bad breath. Brush at least twice a day and try brushing the tongue as well.

Drinking plenty of liquids can wash food residues from the mouth.

Use a mouthwash or breath freshener.

Do not smoke.

See your dentist twice a year. Your dentist will check your mouth thoroughly for gum disease, tooth decay and other problems to treat them.
