Negative thoughts can prevent us from achieving our goals. Luckily, there are ways to stop them.

Negative thoughts

Negative thoughts can overwhelm you and put a strain on your relationship with others, and most importantly, with yourself. In order to improve the situation, it is important to follow some basic steps.

Do not try to push them away

Strange as that may seem, by trying to push negative thoughts away, the only thing you accomplish is actually keeping them very much alive in your head. By letting negative thoughts race through your mind, you allow them to fade away on their own, over time. If you resist the temptation of trying to push them away, they will leave on their own. It takes two to play a game, and when there is only one, boredom easily kicks in.

Have solutions lined up

Write down on a piece of paper the most common negative thoughts you have. Next to them, think of solutions that can fix the problem. In order for this to work, those solutions should be well- thought out and carefully structured, not simply knee-jerk reactions. For example, if you worry too much about getting robbed in the streets, get into the habit of carrying only a limited amount of cash with you. The more prepared you are in advance, the less worried you will be.

Tease your brain

If your mind is overflowed with negative thoughts which force you to constantly be on edge and take some action to either reduce them or completely vanish them, what you can do to improve the situation is trying to tease your brain. If you constantly worry about your partner cheating on you and want to follow him to see where he is going, make a deal with yourself to do this next time and focus on taking care of something else instead. Next time this negative thought comes, make a new deal with yourself to lay in bed for a little while so as to calm down, before you do what you have planned. As you will either end up falling asleep or forgetting about it, once again, you will not act on your worries. By engaging in these mind games, you will gradually begin to think negatively less and less, as you will not actually have the time to focus on your negative thoughts. The fact that this will be happening on a subconscious level will help your mind comply with ease.

Be on the driver's seat

Negative thoughts can affect you only to the degree you allow them to. By taking a pro-active role you will manage to be on the driver's seat and stay there.
