How to take care of cracked heels?

Cracked heels are fissures or cracks on the heel area of your feet. Cracks can occur on your heels due to many reasons. If cracked heels are not taken care of in the proper way, it can lead to infections and further complications.

Cracked Heels Explained

Cracked heels are also known as heel fissures. Fissures are nothing but split skin around the heel area. The right amount of moisture is required to keep skin around the heels elastic and flexible.

Cracked heels can be very painful if it is not treated properly. Cracked heels can easily be prevented by taking proper care.

Causes of cracked heels

Cracked heels can be due to any of the following reasons -

* shoes does not support your heels comfortably

* wearing loose flip flops or tight shoes that rub against the heels

* standing for a long time can also cause cracked heels.

* being overweight

* deficiency of vitamins, minerals, zinc and Omega 3 fatty acids

* hiking

* speed Walking

* diabetes

* dehydration

* regular hot water baths

* continuous exposure to water

* Thyroid diseases

* Psoriasis

* Eczema

* Athlete's Foot

* Fungal infections

* Climatic conditions

Naturally dry heels are more prone to cracking due to long period of standing, walking or running.

Excess weight of the body exerts high pressure on the heels and makes the heels expand sideways. The high pressure exerted on the heels results in cracked heels.

Old age can cause the heels to crack because the skin's elasticity decreases with age.

How to take care of cracked heels?

Keep your feet neat and clean.

Keep your footwear clean

Moisturize your feet daily.

Use a foot care cream that can penetrate deeply into the skin on the heels. Foot care creams that have Urea penetrate the skin more effectively.

Massaging coconut oil or olive oil into the heels helps to keep the heels moisturized and prevents cracking.

Exfoliate gently using a pumice stone once in a week after soaking your feet in warm water for about 10 minutes.

After a bath or a shower moisturize your feet to seal the moisture in. This will helpt to prevent the heels from cracking.

Wear cotton socks when going to sleep to prevent the moisture from drying up

To remove hard skin on the heels soak your feet for fifteen minutes in warm water. Use a pumice stone and gently scrub on the hardened skin areas. Wipe dry and apply a moisturizer.

Mix sugar with olive oil or coconut oil. Spread the mixture on the cracked heels and gently scrub. Wash off and apply a moisturizer.

Drink water and keep yourself hydrated.

If you do not take care of cracked heels they can become infected and lead to further complications.

People with diabetes have to take extra care of their feet because they are more prone to infections.
