I am knocking your doors to reintroduce myself to you. Please handle me with care.

Heart

I am your heart, a muscular organ behind and slightly left of your breastbone. My function in pumping blood through the network of arteries and veins is very essential even if I am only about a size of your fist. Your brain, organs, muscles, and the rest rely on me for the oxygen and nutrients.

I have four chambers that work together for optimum function. Let's have a quick review about them.

The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood via the superior and inferior vena cava.

The right ventricle receives blood from right atrium and pumps to the pulmonary artery on the way to the lungs.

The left atrium receives oxygenated blood via the pulmonary vein.

The left ventricle pumps the oxygenated blood to the rest of the body via the aorta.

With me is a network of blood vessels, the coronoray arteries, that run along the surface to provide oxygenated blood and nutrients to my muscle. Around me is a web of special nerve tissue porducing and sending eletrical impulses for the contraction and relaxation of my muscles.

You have to handle me with care. Whenever you have excessive cholesterol blocking the way for the distribution of oxygen-rich blood and nutrients, my affected muscles will be depleted and eventually, won't function properly. When this happens, my muscular tissues will be damaged causing a heart attack. At the end, it is you who will suffer for not taking good care of me.

I need your common sense to indulge in a healthy lifestyle for my welfare which in return is your welfare, too. This may not ensure you a forever healthy me, but the chances of keeping me away from diseases would be a good percentage of the possibility for you to live a happy and healthy life.

I would prefer if you become a health watcher and be more meticulous of the foods you eat. Get rid of fats, cholesterol, and too much salt. It's about time to welcome fruits and vegetables to your diet. Also, it's better if you stop being a couch potato, and start exercising. Start slowly to a healthy living. Acquire appropriate weight, have your blood pressure regularly checked and control your diabetes if you have.

Your body needs me and I need you so please handle me with care. Then I'll guarantee you a loving heart.

Meaningful and useful - better we heed. I find some take more care how they look than what they put into their mouths! siva
