If you are a person who is trying to recover from depression, you know all too well how hard it can be. Depression is not something that can just be willed away. Staying alone and isolating yourself only makes the depression worse. Reaching out for support is important, whether it be to family or friends; or if you have severe depression, you must seek therapy to help you through these trying times.

Here are some of tips to help you through your depression and onto a better life.

You may be thinking that taking care of an animal would be just too much for you to handle especially if you live alone. However, taking care of an animal might just be the thing to keep you going. Pets make good companions. If you have a pet you are no longer completely alone. Taking care of an animal that is totally dependent on you will give you a purpose for living. Some depressed people feel they are hopeless and useless.

Your pet is not going to find you hopeless or useless, that pet depends on you for food, exercise, a clean environment and love. You may find that playing with your pet is enjoyable and you look forward to sharing fun times with your pet. Petting your furry friend and having it snuggle up to you can really help you regain some warm feelings you thought were no longer stirring in your heart.



A healthy body promotes a healthy mind. For quite some time now researchers have seen a connection between body and mind. One way of staving away depression is your diet. Eat good healthy meals loaded with fruits and vegetables and whole grains. The Mediterranean diet is a healthy diet. Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig are also good diets. Drink lots of water.

There are studies showing that Omega 3 fatty acids and foods containing Vitamin B 12 can boost your mood.

Low fat dairy foods and fish are a source of vitamin B 12

Fish such as salmon, mackerel and tuna and are a good source of omega 3. Also flax seed, dark green vegetables, nuts, soybean are also a great source of omega 3.

If you are a vegetarian and do not eat any meat or fish, then you need to eat fortified cereals, dairy products and take vitamin B12 supplements.

A good way to boost your mood is to eat foods such as fruits and vegetables, a bake potato, and pasta. You can also select graham crackers or popcorn for a snack. These foods raise the level of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a chemical in the brain that is responsible for balancing your moods. If you have too little serotonin you will be depressed. Vegetables, whole grains, and fruit are also important for getting in the right amounts of fiber.

Choose less caffeine products

Caffeine products can make you jittery, anxious,and general malaise. People with depression can also have anxiety. Consuming too much coffee, tea, soda and chocolate products makes your condition worse not better. Drinking too much coffee can also interfere with your sleep and that too can make you lethargic and feel depressed.

Exercise improves you mood, serotonin

Researchers have long known that the mind and body work together, when one is ill the other one generally is not performing at its best.

Depression is a mood, but this psychological issue can also go hand in hand with body aches and pains. Furthermore, headaches, migraines,and severe health issues can also cause depression. Make sure you work with your doctor, counsellor, and other health professionals who can help treat your aches and pains and cure your depression.


Exercise is a great way to improve your mood well as well as your overall health. Exercising releases endorphin in the brain that are often called natural mood enhancers.

Jogging is a good exercise, but you don’t have to do that. Just getting out for a good walk will make you feel better. You can walk with a family member or friend and have a pleasant social experience. In time you can increase your activity levels. It will help you relax, have a better night’s sleep, and put you in a better mood.

Thanks for sharing your informed advice. I totally agree that diet, exercise and the unconditional love of a pet can promote the being well of body, mind and spirit.

I agree that exercise is a great way to improve your mood when you're stressed. I often take long walks to deal with my stress!!!
