Self confidence can be tough to have in our uncertain world. But it can be easier than you think with these three little tricks.

Self-Confidence

Success depends on perception. Not just with how others see us, but how we see ourselves. As the old saying goes, if you cannot love yourself, how can others love you? By the same token, if you cannot believe in yourself then how can others believe in you? If nobody can believe in you, then success will be hard coming, if it comes at all. I would like to share three simple tricks to help you as you gain confidence in yourself and, in turn, see others grow in their confidence toward you.

Where the Head goes, the Body Follows

This covers easily 99% of your struggle and can be better summed up as "think positive" or "fake it 'til you make it." A positive self-image does wonders for a person's self-esteem and I promise you this: You are no different. Skepticism is perfectly understandable with something like this, I understand, I used to believe the same way. So, I want you to try this first tip for a few days:

Work on your smile and eye-contact. Seems simple, yes? This actually takes a bit of work, but a few days of steady practice will do wonders. For the smile and eye contact, at first, I recommend a mirror. Find a smile that looks best on you (yes, there is such a thing) and try to perform what is called a "ducheynne smile," that is, a smile which reaches your eyes. This takes some training, but you will pick it up faster than you would expect. I recommend thinking of something from your past that brings you genuine joy, maybe a happy childhood memory, maybe a victory over a circumstance you had thought unbeatable.

Barring that, think of something hilarious and note the residual smile after you finish laughing. Remember: The smile needs to reach your eyes.

As for eye contact, this is a little trick I picked up years ago that has always done wonders; look between the eyes. When speaking to something, direct your attention to the spot between their eyes and just watch it instead of looking the person in the eye. It will diminish any nerves you might have, and will make you look as though you have a confident gaze.

Smarten that posture.

Next we come to posture. If you have been working on the previous two points, you may have gravitated toward this naturally. If so, that is fine, but I would still recommend reading through this section. Go back to your mirror and stand facing it. Straighten up a bit, raise your shoulders high and roll them backward. Relax the shoulders and, if you feel like you have a rake taped to your back, roll your pelvis forward slightly.

That's all there is to it. This one small change in posture will work wonders for you. You might not notice it at first, but people will look at you differently. Some may be confused and ask if you have gotten a haircut, or maybe even grown an inch or two taller! As silly as it may sound to you now, you may even notice people approaching you more readily than they have before. This is normal. Enjoy it.

The Awesome List

Now that we have the tough stuff out of the way, we can get to something easier. No, this is not backwards, I placed these four tips (I know what the summary says, I gave an extra) this way for a reason. If you can handle the harder stuff first, the easier stuff will, logically, be a breeze for you.

You are going to make a list, which I will call your "Awesome List." This is simply a list of skills, accomplishments, things you are thankful for, and things you are proud of accomplishing. You are going to write these down in full, and it might take anywhere from an hour to a day, but it will need to be written... Because this is why you are awesome. That is how you will see it; Why you are awesome and why you deserve respect.

This list is a living list, by the way. That means it is expected to grow as you accomplish more awesome feats, learn and eventually master new skills, and even see things no one else has seen and do things no one else can do (to quote Egg Shen.)

Whenever you have a rough day or just don't feel like getting out of bed, you are going to consult this list. This Awesome List will remind you of why you deserve respect and why you deserve the best this world can offer. It may seem like a little thing, but a personal record of what you have accomplished will do wonders to boost your confidence after a rough day or a bit of negativity in your life.

Now, go out there and be awesome.
