OCD is a disease that is understood only during the last 100 years after Freud. It is a disease that can affect children and adults.

OCD disorders

The world of medical and mental disease has advanced beyond recognition in the last century particularly after the theory of psychoanalysis by Freud. Diseases which are now termed mental diseases were not understood just 100 years back. In earlier times , it was believed that people who experienced blasphemous, sexual, or other obsessive thoughts were possessed by the Devil. Based on this reasoning, treatment involved banishing the "evil" from the "possessed" person through exorcism was in vogue.

Psychoanalysis has now identified a mental makeup disease often referred to as OCD or Obsessive compulsive disorder. This disease is quite peculiar though at times many people are prey to it. It starts in childhood and adults who have this disease can trace the origin to childhood. The disease involves a person forming some compulsive habit and in the process becoming doing acts that have no rationale. As an example it could involve things like a compulsive washing of hands, driving around aimlessly or repetitive acts that have no rationale. This is a subconscious anxiety. A person may also have excessive thoughts of sex and could lead to irrational acts like collecting women’s shoes or lingerie.

In OCD a person is otherwise normal, but never the less it is a disease that must be treated. Firstly a patient will need a thorough psychological examination. It will involve many sittings with the psychiatrist. After that the best course of treatment can be worked out. This could involve treatment with anti-depressants in conjunction with therapy for anxiety disorders. Anti-depressants alone cannot be successful.

The main therapy is to treat anxiety disorders by Cognitive behavior therapy. This treatment focuses on getting the negative thoughts out of the mind and creating healthy atmosphere. The treatment can be long drawn, but the end result is good.

I have found that some people with OCD when counselled , can tell exactly when the problem started , and what triggers it in their minds ...then , with further counsel and prayer they are freed from its grip on their lives forever .
Bless you for sharing this with us here .

Those who admit they have the problems can be helped. However, many of such victims will never admit they have the problems. They are beyond help.
