Like our previous series on child abuse, female abuse runs rampant all over the world.

Today's topic is about abused women. What can we do about it and most importantly how can we prevent it. The series will end with a case study of a battered Montreal women and the role her friends played in her support.

Early signs for female domestic abuse continued

If you partner is jealous do not mistake that for love. Jealousy is a controlling manipulation meant to keep you in your place. It is meant to keep you "all to himself." When you exercise your independence, the abuse begins such as name-calling, total confinement, and physical aggression.

Tell tale signs go unnoticed

Abusers usually show a telltale pattern of abuse before women realize that they are actually being abused. These earlier signs can be very subtle or they can be confused for being normal, or scoffed off as a couple's inability to communicate with each other.

Women often make excuses for this type of behaviour with justifications such as:

he is too busy
he has a lot on his mind
he is going through a bad time right now
he has issues
he only does this sometimes
he is actually very good to me.

Defending the abuser

Women defend these men and by doing so they defend bad behaviour. There is never a legitimate excuse for bad behavior. A good and healthy relationship does not include abuse by either partner!

Furthermore until the hitting starts many women do not realize that although they are not being physically abused they may very well be emotionally abused.

Emotional abuse is a good forerunner for physical abuse, because these women are already vulnerable. Some are no longer capable of distinguishing between good and bad behaviours exhibited by their mates.

Note: Some relationships never escalate into physical abuse but neglect and emotional abuse are clearly present.

The more obvious signs of domestic abuse will be discussed in the next part of this series. The series will end with a case study of an abused Montreal woman.
