Is drinking milk and consuming dairy product could prevent bone loss?

Mass media, advertisement always said milk is good to your bone health but some researchers disagree because of some reasons. In this page, I wrote about milks benefits and adverse effects, especially to bone health.

Introduction

We’ve been told since kids that drinking milk will increase calcium concentration in bone, triggers rapid growth and keep your bone strong. Drinking milk is also important for adult people to prevent osteoporosis. Milk is one of the sources of calcium that is easily absorbed by our body. People usually drink cow milk or goat milk. Milk also processed into variety of dairy products such as cheese, ice cream, yogurt, sweets, desserts etc.
What about nutrients that is contained in milk, for example the whole milk? According to http://nutrition.data.self.com whole milk contains many nutrients that is needed by our body, such as fats, fatty acids, protein, cholesterol (24 mg/244 g), carbohydrates, vitamins (such as vitamin A, D, E, K, B12, riboflavin, folate, etc), mineral (such as calcium about 276 mg/244 g, zinc, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, selenium and iron).
Source of the calcium is not only from milk or dairy product; the others are from supplements that contain calcium, also from dark leafy greens, dried beans, almond and some legumes.

Milk's effect

Is drinking milk really help prevent bone loss?
There are two opinions about it. First, they believe drinking milk will help prevent osteoporosis. Meanwhile on the other side believe that consuming milk and dairy product will have little effect or non significant effect on the rate of fractures but may cause some health problems. Milk is one of many sources of calcium. We can get it from milk and dairy product, supplements that contain calcium, also from dark leafy greens, dried beans, almond and some legumes.
We need to know that calcium accumulates in the skeleton during skeletal growth and maturation at an average rate of 150 mg per day until early twenties in humans. In the age about 50 years both men and women, bone balance become negative. Therefore maximize calcium intake before early twenties could be an important foundation for the future. But it will not prevent bone loss, because the loss of bone with aging is the result of many factors, such as genetic, life style, physical inactivity and hormonal.
Drinking milk will give you many benefits but it also has adverse effects, such as lactose intolerance, and high saturated fat content. Consuming dairy product such as cheese has adverse effect to bone health because it contains high sodium.

Conclusion

Although according to some researchers (http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/calcium-full-story/ ; http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/72/3/681.full), milk and dairy product doesn’t give significant effects to bone health, it has benefits effect to our body, because it contains vitamins, minerals and protein. Then, if you want to drink milk or consuming dairy product such as yogurt or cheese, is allowed as long as is not excessive and If you experience some symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain etc, you need to stop or control your consumption.
