According to official statistics there are almost 80,000 people in Northern Ireland with diabetes, yet there appears to be a low level of nursing support available

Diabetes - nursing levels in Northern Ireland

THE almost 80,000 people in Northern Ireland have just 60 specialist diabetic nurse to provide care, support and advice, according to official figures published by the Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety, Edwin Poots.

Answering a written question from Member of the Legislative Assembly, Roy Beggs, the Minister published details in each of Northern Ireland's health and social care trusts.

The total number of specialist diabetic nurses is 58 (plus two paediatric specialist diabetic nurses), but not all work full time. The 'whole time equivalent', which is the equivalent of full time posts is just 48.3.

The Minister also revealed: "At 31March 2013 there were 79,072 GP-registered patients aged 17 and over with diabetes mellitus (Type 1 or Type 2) in Northern Ireland. This information is sourced from the Quality & Outcomes Framework (QOF) of the General Medical Services contract

"As care of children with diabetes mellitus is generally under the control of specialists and not general practitioners they are not included in the QOF register. Information on the number of children with diabetes is not currently available centrally."

However, Mr Poots did also reveal that the number of special diabetes nurses may rise when the Nursing and Midwifery Workforce Review, but did not make a commitment that this would happen.

The health and social care trust with the largest number of specialist diabetic nurses is Belfast with 18, while the Western Health and Social Care Trust has just five
