Making Excellent Coffee

I live in Ecuador where they grow coffee. You would be surprised though how little is consumed here. Coffee is such a personal thing. How we take our coffee says a lot about us. Where we are from, how fancy we are and even a bit about how we relate to the world. A “make mine black” coffee drinker is probably just a different person from the “special order at the exclusive coffee shop” drinker.

There are some basics for making an excellent pot/cup of coffee that the pros will not share.

No Soap

Make sure the pot is absolutely completely and totally soap free. Rinse it 100 times or never wash it with soap, but soap residue in the pot is one of the reason the single cup coffee makers make such nice coffee.

The Water

Use tasty water. Use a carbon filter to remove the nasty tastes of chlorine, fluoride, sulphur and anything else that your local water supply contains. Distilled water makes terrible coffee so don't use that. If you do not like the water's taste plain, it will not make good coffee.

The Coffee

Use great coffee. Spend a bit extra. It is worth it. Smell the package. If it makes you swoon with how delicious it smells, then get that one. Do you like yours dark? Burnt a bit? A lighter roast? If you have not found your coffee to be heavenly, consider a lighter roast first.

The Coffee Maker

Use a good machine/system. Some of the best coffee can be made in the simplest ways. A French Press is one of those. A simple drip coffee maker can make excellent coffee, but be sure to use a clean (not smelly) and good quality filter. Picking up old filters at the dollar store can ruin your coffee.

Drink it Now!

Do not let it sit. Fresh coffee is best. 20 minutes is really as long as any coffee should sit. If it sits longer than that the quality suffers. A lot. Don't even think about keeping it warm for 2 hours. Make 2 small pots and have them both be great.

Coffee is the elixir of life for many of us! Drink up!

I love coffee .... the smell, the flavour, the process of making it. We currently use an Aeropress system. Makes one cup at a time with a fresh filter for each cup. Really enjoying your articles ... concise, friendly. Keep it up!

Great article! I love coffee! My family also loves it. I have a 12 cup coffee maker and that's what I make every morning at 4:30 a.m. My family finishes the first pot within and hour and then I make a second pot. We are what you would call serious coffee drinkers. My favorite cup is always the first cup. I've experimented over the years but I love Folgers coffee.
