Meditation-does it work?

Meditation has been proven that it helps relieve stress, lowers your heart rate and presents a soothing effect on the participant. It brings the mind and body together to help deal with every day's stress.


Meditation has many origins in different religious customs and today it is a well-established practice among many cults and ordinary people. Meditation originally began with the Buddhist and the Hindu religion but has gained popularity in many western religions.
Any form of meditation has the same effect- “to quiet the mind” or “centering”. This is considered to be a spiritual exercise. It has been proven to be a good stress and anxiety reliever. Science has shown that the relaxation of the mind has a healing effect on the body and helps to prevent diseases.

People who meditate on a daily basis feel that body, mind, and soul are one, and are less stressed and more accepting, to external problems and are able to deal with them without difficulty.

Mediatation methods

Meditation methods vary however; the best position is one that you are comfortable with. Generally, you sit in a comfortable position however, lying down is not recommended due to the chance of falling asleep. Relax your whole body by loosening your muscles and take slow deep breathes. Take a few minutes to just concentrate on how your body is slowly relaxing and listen to your breathing.

There is a technique called “hypnotism” which is when you mentally focus on each part of your body relaxing. Start with your feet and work yourself up to your head visualizing each body part relaxing. To empty your mind just let your thoughts wander. Don’t fight them let them come and then release them.

In Transcendental Meditation the popular method of meditation that was taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 60’ and 70’s, he taught his students to use a “mantra” which is a word or sound to help distract thoughts. Just repeat the sound or word over and over until you have no more thoughts. The traditional mantra is “om” and is used all over the world by meditators. Some use this method and others use an object to focus their attention on like a flickering candle.

Yoga is another form of meditation and its beneficial practice is as effective as any other. You can play soft music while doing yoga and let it carry away your problems and worries and put you in a relaxed state. This meditative state lowers your blood pressure, relieves stress, and anxiety.

Meditation can be practiced anywhere- some do it in a car as a passenger, or bus or on a train. Others go to the extreme and go to a mountain top while others have a special room. If you are a beginner it is best to have a private quiet place and do the practices each day at the same time.

Meditation has such a positive effect on your nervous system it cannot be disputed. Doctors have performed neurological tests while patients were in a meditative state and have found that during meditation they are revealing a deep state of relaxation.
Meditation is not only good for your health but some people use it to contact their spiritual Guide or for self-improvement. It is not an escape from reality nor does it involve you losing consciousness. In today’s world it is a way to escape stress and anxiety.

this is a great page Macourt..thank you..I do spiritual exercises to reach into higher levels but as long as we are doing some thing to uplift ourselves that is all that counts...

Thank you both for the comments...I also believe it helps. When I am stressed I find 5 minutes to just clear my mind and what a difference it make's. I think if more people tried it they would feel a difference.

Good post. Meditation helps, pprovided you know the technique. I am a Divine Reiki master. Reiki helped me heal myself from various health issues. Now I am devoted to Reiki. I do meditation everyday. I also send healing to those who ask and are really in need.

Nice post, Macourt. Once we find our comfort zone with meditation we find peace and tranquility. Though I don't meditate at a particular time I have simple ways to keep my mind at peace - siva
