Migraine is the most common cause of headache. Migraine headache occurs when there is an imbalance or lack of chemical transmitters in the brain, resulting to disturbance in blood flow and possible inflammation in the brain.

Migraine

Migraine is the most common cause of headache. It afflicts about 15 percent of women and six percent of men in the United States. Migraine is recurrent in nature and is often accompanied by nausea, and vomiting, vision disturbances such as photophobia, and lightheadedness or scalp tenderness. In severe cases, there can be an accompanying loss of consciousness, dizziness, and weakness or numbness of the extremities. Oftentimes there is an aura or warning symptoms like flashes of light or lightheadedness prior to the onset of the headache.

The underlying cause can be hereditary. Migraine headache occurs when there is an imbalance or lack of chemical transmitters in the brain, resulting to disturbance in blood flow and possible inflammation in the brain.

Red wine, sweet foods like chocolates, certain cheeses, monosodium glutamate (MSG), menstrual period, and hunger, lack of sleep, bright lights, hormonal pills, perfume, emotional upsets, and worries trigger migraine. On the other hand, adequate sleep, pregnancy, excitement, and a happy mood can "switch off" migraine attacks.

For mild migraine attacks, a simple pain reliever such as mefenamic acid, ibuprofen, diclofenac, and naproxen will suffice. For severe attacks, add ergotamine derivatives together with preventive (prophylactic) medications to the usual medications.

Though MRI is not a routinary procedure, it can better visualize smaller details in the brain. If your headache, however, is not the typical presentation or there are other notable signs and symptoms, or it is not relieved with the prescribed medications, further neurologic investigation has to be done to check for other causes of headaches such as tumors or blood vessel abnormalities like aneurysm or arteriovenous malformation.
