Montreal has made many efforts in bringing to the public the issues of Mental Illness. Montreal is a sponsor of International Mental Illness Day. One of the many ways we promote mental illness awareness is our Walk for Mental Health.

Margaret Trudeau

On October 10, 2010 the world celebrated the International Mental Illness Day. Canada's former prime minster, Pierre Elliot Trudeau's wife, Margaret Trudeau, remembers her bout with mental illness. Margaret Trudeau suffered with bipolar disorder long before she knew what it was. Controlling the highs and lows was just too much for her to do on her own.

Margaret's depression

Margaret Trudeau's book, Changing My Mind published by HarperCollins, chronicles her life and the changes she had to make after being rushed to the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, where she was involuntarily placed for two years undergoing necessary treatment that would save her life.

The book talks about her postpartum depression days after the birth of Sacha, her second son and her stint in a Montreal hospital. It also goes through her deep depression after the death of Michel, her third son, who died in an avalanche while skiing in British Columbia.

Sunday October 24, 2010, the Montreal Walks For Mental Health 2010 event took place at Philips Square in downtown Montreal at 11:00 AM. This 5 kilometer walk was going to take place rain or shine and there is a mandatory check in at 10:00 sharp.

The goal of the walk is to raise public awareness of mental illness, help to quash the stigma surrounding mental illness, and to raise funds for different community centers enabling them to provide services for the mentally ill.

The 2009 walk was so successful, attracting over 600 participants, that it attracted two Montreal hospitals and Health and Services centres as well as several communities services to worked together to organize this year's Montreal Walks for Mental Health event.

There will be information booths available at the site. The year's (2010) honorary speakers were Margaret Trudeau, former wife of former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Guy Latraverse, impresario, music, and gala producer.
