The patients of multiple personality disorder are increasing in number every year. So, it has become necessary for us to be aware of the disease and its consequences.

Dissociative Identity Disorder or Multiple Personality Disorder

Dissociative Identity Disorder, also called Multiple Personality Disorder, is a psychiatric disorder in which the patient has different personalities living in his body, in other words, there are two different persons living in the body of the same person. It is often caused by a severe mental trauma experienced in the childhood due to physical or mental abuse. The same person behaves differently at different times and is often not able to recollect activities done by him or her during the influence of another personality. Imagine that you suddenly wake up in the kitchen, licking your fingers, when your mother comes and tells you that you have eaten up the cake that she had reserved for the guests, and you cannot remember anything at all! Each different personality is characterized by his or her distinctive mannerisms, body language, postures and a unique behaviour. Some cases even report that the person speaks different languages under the influence of different personalities. Sometimes, the person may even behave like an animal. Along with DID, there are a few other symptoms that the patient may experience - like sleep disorders, anxiety, panic attacks, suicidal tendencies, etc. This is a very serious problem and the patient's family should pay adequate attention to the disease instead of ignoring it as a minor problem.
