Natural Choices to Pharmaceuticals

One out of three Americans choose alternative medicine instead of conventional medicine such as prescription drugs.

Introduction

According to new studies from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reveals more Americans choose alternative forms of medicine for health conditions such as chronic pain. Today even hospitals are now offering alternative medicine. A recent report by the American Hospital Association reported 42 percent of responding hospitals offer one or more Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies.

Prescription Drugs

Today new prescription drugs have a one in five chance of serious side reactions after approval. Systematic reviews of hospital charts have shown prescribed medications cause 1.9 million hospitalizations each year and adverse reactions from prescription drugs has been estimated to cause 200,000 deaths.

Prescription drugs and the Alternative

The good news there is alternatives to prescription medicines. “"There are natural therapies available that are much safer, often more effective, and cost much less," said Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, internist and author.

Pain Medications

Drugs such as Vicodin, hydrocodone-acetaminophen and tramadol are prescribed for pain. In 2015 there were around 300 million pain prescriptions written.

To self-manage pain try using yoga or tai chi both which have been shown to improve the symptoms of chronic pain. Hypnotherapy has been shown effective in the use of pain management. Other therapies include acupuncture, chiropractic, massage and relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises and mediation.

Turmeric reduces inflammation. In capsule form take one to grams daily. Devils claw root reduces low back pain and pain from arthritis take 30-100 milligrams each day. Glucosamine and Chondroitin have been shown to reduce pain and improve movement in the joints. Ginger a natural anti-inflammatory relieves arthritis pain, headaches and muscle soreness. In traditional Chinese Medicine eucommia bark used to relieve back and joint pain.

Statin Drugs

Statin drugs are used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. These drugs do have warnings which include memory loss, high blood sugar and type 2 diabetes. Common brand names include Lipitor, Crestor, and Zocor. Between 2011-2012 83 percent of adults who were prescribed cholesterol lowering medications used statins according to the CDC.
Foods that contain stanols and sterols such as walnuts and salmon may help to lower blood cholesterol. Garlic and vitamin C may also lower cholesterol levels. The TLC diet reduces high blood cholesterol.

High Blood Pressure Drugs

Drugs like Lisinopril, Norvasc and Azor are prescribed for high blood pressure. According to the CDC about one in three adults or 75 million have high blood pressure. A healthy diet, exercise and not smoking can control your blood pressure. Practices such as meditation and yoga may lower blood pressure. There is evidence that qi gong controls high blood pressure. Also, biofeedback and transcendental meditation can help lower blood pressure. Coca, coenzyme Q10, garlic and omega 3 fatty acid supplements can lower blood pressure in those with hypertension.

Antidepressants

Common medications like Cymbalta and Lexapro have been prescribed for those suffering from depression. More than one in twenty Americans age 12 and older reported current depression in 2005-2006. Relaxation techniques may have a moderate benefit on symptoms of depression. There has been some evidence that St. John’s Wort may have a effect on mild to moderate major depressive disorder. SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) is not approved by the FDA to treat depression but is used to treat depression in Europe as a prescription medication. Yoga, massage, tai chi have also been used to treat depression.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics such as penicillin’s and tetracyclines are commonly prescribed antibiotics. Today antibiotics are losing effectiveness. For immune system practice yoga or mediation. Olive leaf extract fight a wide range of viruses and bacteria. Garlic can fight diseases and kill bacteria. Oregon Grape used as a tea can treat urinary tract infections. Cayenne pepper can treat sore throats.

Insomnia Drugs

Insomnia drugs such as Ambien, Lunesta and Rozerem. A cup of chamomile tea before bedtime has help people with insomnia. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and self-hypnosis are a supported psychological treatment for insomnia. Listening to music to relax had moderate benefits on insomnia. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine includes melatonin supplements to reduce symptoms of jet lag across multiple time zones. Melatonin was found to have role in sleep medicine for insomnia due to its benign effects compared to pharmaceutical agents.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone medications include birth control pills, Hormone Therapy (HT) in pill or patch and even anti-depressants. Yoga, tai chi and meditation have been shown to reduce common menopausal symptoms including frequency and intensity of hot flashes, sleep and mood disturbances, stress, muscle and joint pain. Acupuncture provides temporary relief of hot flashes. Botanicals such as phytoestrogens may help to relieve symptoms of menopause. The North American Menopause Society lists black cohosh for menopause to treat hot flashes and night sweats but to be used only six months or less.

Musculoskeletal Inflammation

Musculoskeletal inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and tendinitis prescriptions include Cymbalta and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen. Omega 3 fatty acids may provide a modest benefit for symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Devil claw has shown some evidence that it may beneficial for osteoarthritis of the spine, knee and hip. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory effects. Powdered ginger dose is one to two capsules daily at500-1000 mg twice a day to fight inflammation.

Asthma

Asthma medications such as inhaled corticosteroids for long term asthma control, albuterol as a rescue medication and allergy shots for allergy induced asthma have been prescribed. Extract of Sophora flavescens used in Chinese medicine has shown positive results with no side effects. Caffeine in coffee can improve airway function for up to four hours after consumption according to a review of published trials. Vitamin E (gamma-tocopherol) fond in foods such as sunflower seeds, broccoli and Swiss Chard or daily dose of a vitamin E preparation rich in gamma-tocopherol have been shown to prevent inflammation and decrease oxidative stress with no side effects.
