Prague student, and my good friend Peter Studený, is planning to achieve his lifetime ambition.

His idea

Next month he´s flying to Nepal with five friends to begin a three-week trek of the Himalayas. Peter, 20, is aiming to raise money for young disabled people at the same time. His younger sister, Jackie, who is paralysed and in a wheelchair, is the inspiration for Peter´s trip.

There´s charity called Go-Geters. It helps young people who are seriously ill or who are disabled, like my sister."I always enjoy travelling abroad, especially on unusual adventures, so it´s a grat way to combine a holiday with helping people," says Peter, a Sociology student at Charles University. Peter is raising £5 000 before he goes. A small part of the money pays for his flight and the rest goes to Go-Getters, which organises holidays and other leisure activities for young disabled people. The charity hopes to use the money to buy a new minibus, specially designed foe people in wheelchairs.

Students attitude

Peter is amazed by the response of other students to his unusual idea. "They all want to help me. It´s fantastic! Next week all the other students in my group are doing a 24 hour sponsored silence. People are going to pay us to keep quiet! Some of the lecturers are going to do it as well- for some of them it´s going to be very difficult!"

At the moment Peter is training for the trip. He goes to the gym every morning, goes running every evening and goes swimming four times a week. Jamie is also following a special high-protein diet of fish, fruit and eggs.

"We´re going to walk throught the high Himalayas for about seven hours every day for almost three weeks, so we need to be very fit! We´re all realy excited about it, but I also feel nervous. It´s certainly a big challenge for all of us."

And what I think of Peter´s plans? "It´s a great idea but a little bit crazy too! I´m so proud that Peter and his friends want to help!"

Why not stay at home and donate ALL of the money? The idea behind the charity is a good one. Before donating to any charity I suggest checking them out with the government or the websites that examine what charities "do" with their donations (you'd be surpised to find many well known charities spending 95% of their donations on salaries, offices, etc. and only 5% actually going to help those in whose name money was raised).
