Phobias are hard to Overcome

All my life, I have been terrified of rats and mice. I have no idea why, as I have never been bitten by one. My fear is so strong, that if I have a bad dream they haunt me. I can feel them running all over my body whilst I lay there petrified, and totally unable to move.

Every year I watch celebrities on I'M A CELEBRITY, GET ME OUT OF HERE. on ITV. Usually one of their trials is to lay in a box underground, that also frightens me, and keep absolutely still for 2 minutes, whilst rats run all over them. I watch with a mixture of horror at their ordeal, and admiration for their courage, as they seem to cope with it so easily.

Recently the actress Linda Robson wanted to cure her lifelong fear of rats, and she sat in a room, gradually being exposed to a rat, finally ending up with it on her hand. How brave that was! Since then she has admitted that although her phobia is cured, she still doesn't really like them.

Mice are as bad to me

I find mice just as frightening, I think it must be the movement. Once many years ago, I was babysitting for someone, I heard a squeal and a bang behind me, but was too scared to leave my chair. When the parents came in, it turned out they had set a trap, I never saw the mouse, but it was so frightening to me, I could never bring myself to go back to that house again.

Then one day I saw my cat tormenting a mouse in the middle of the lawn. It lay very still as if dead, and although I know it's their instinct, seeing her do that bothered me. I threw some water at her and she ran away. I stood quietly at the kitchen door, but the mouse never moved. I guessed it had probably died of heart failure, and i felt sad its little life had been extinguished .

I was just about to move away, then I saw a flicker of life, and suddenly it scampered away as fast as its legs would allow, away from my cat, who had now gone into a field at the back of our house to see what else she could find.

Although I am frightened of rodents , I could never harm them., I have a fear of them scuttling around my feet. they deserve their life as much as any of us, I just don't want them to cross my path

Now what about Spiders?

Funnily enough, spiders don't bother me a bit, but I know lots of people who are terrified of them. Many a time i have been called by a friend to remove one, again I couldn't harm it. I try to trap it under a glass, then just open a door or window, and let it have its freedom.

My husband John was a very strong looking man, with broad shoulders, he looked a typical tough guy, although he had a heart of gold. I was most surprised one day when he asked me to remove a spider , which had lodged itself in the corner of the ceiling, just above his side of the bed.

He admitted that he didn't feel comfortable around spiders, so after I had set it free,, I felt relieved to know that I wasn't the only person with a phobia. But what I will never understand is why the thought of rodents strikes such a fear inside me.

Hi Carol, a very nice article indeed! I do have a phobia, actually, I hate flying, which makes me feel like being in a trap or a coffin and a panick attack totally overwhelms me. A horrible feeling! Luckily, I hardly ever go by plane, and if I do, need to take a high dose of sedatives. Love, Blanka x

Interesting, Carol. Some believe these phobias are carried over from previous lifetimes. I have a phobia of snakes - siva
