Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. Smoking causes many diseases and reduces the health of smokers in general.

Smoking and Death:

The adverse health effects from cigarette smoking account for an estimated 443,000 deaths, or nearly one of every five deaths, each year in the United States.2,3
More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined.2,4
Smoking causes 90% of all lung cancer deaths in men and 80% of all lung cancer deaths in women.
An estimated 90% of all deaths from chronic obstructive lung disease are caused by smoking.

Smoking and Increased Health Risks:

Compared with nonsmokers, smoking is estimated to increase the risk of—
coronary heart disease by 2 to 4 times 1,5
stroke by 2 to 4 times 1,6
men developing lung cancer by 23 times 1
women developing lung cancer by 13 times,1 and
dying from chronic obstructive lung diseases (such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema) by 12 to 13 times.

Acute myeloid leukemia
Bladder cancer
Cancer of the cervix
Cancer of the esophagus
Kidney cancer
Cancer of the larynx (voice box)
Lung cancer
Cancer of the oral cavity (mouth)
Cancer of the pharynx (throat)
Stomach cancer
Cancer of the uterus

How should I quit smoking?

Choose a date within the next two weeks to quit. Don't wait for the "perfect" day – just pick a date and work with it. Put it in your calendar.

If you'd like:
List your reasons for quitting - health, family, money.
Write down some new hobbies you can do instead of smoking – exercise, knitting, making model airplanes- something to keep your hands and mind busy.
Speak with friends, family, and colleagues and ask for support. Tell them about your plan to quit, so it feels more real to you.
Start making the changes to push smoking out of your everyday life - stop smoking in the house and in the car. Make your house and car smoke-free, so no one is allowed to smoke inside.

Medicines to Quit Smoking:
You can also quit smoking with the help of Medicines!

Chantix is a tablet to help quit smoking. It contains a medicine called varenicline. Chantix was approved by the FDA in May 2006, and in the US is only available on prescription. Chantix is started one week before quitting.


Zyban is a tablet to help quit smoking. It contains a medicine called bupropion. bupropion is also the medicine in Wellbutrin, which is used for depression. Zyban is started before quitting smoking, with a target date usually in the second week of taking Zyban. Zyban is only available on a doctor’s prescription.

First things first. Thanks for the follow Armom and welcome to Wikinut. I hope that your stay with us will be a long, enjoyable and profitable one.

Smoking. I started smoking when I was twelve years old and had progressed from cigarettes to cigars by the time I was sixteen. I quit cold turkey when I was 30 or 31. I haven't smoked since and that has was 36 or 37 years ago. My body recovered nicely and the doctors tell me, when I go in for my annual flight physical that I have the body of a 30 year old athlete.
