There are many reasons why people don't exercise. Here's a short list. and the ways to jump over these hurdles.

What’s your reason?

I’ve heard a lot of reasons why people don’t exercise. What’s surprising is that they expect to have sexy abs, improve fitness and overall wellness. Here’s a not-so-secret secret – you need exercise in order to achieve physical health. Here’s a litany of reasons why people don’t exercise. Of course you can add more to the list. Moreover, I’ll tell you how to address these concerns and get you up and running – literally.

No time to exercise
This is one of the most common reasons people use. The truth is I used to say these same words. I’m a dad, a husband and am employed fulltime. I leave the house at 6:00 in the morning and arrive home at around 8:30 in the evening. Did I mention that I work Saturdays as well? But this does not get in the way. I’m sure you have your own list of things to do for the day and even for the week. But I know you can squeeze in a few minutes for fitness and health.

Here’s what you do:
1. Try waking up 15 minutes earlier and do a few exercises for a change.
2. Start with 10 minute exercises (or even less) a few times a week.
3. Free a day every month for exercise. It’s not much, but at least this is a start. Then start adding more days.
4. Have a “you” time. Here, just focus on yourself and no one else.
5. Turn simple tasks into exercise. Example taking the stairs instead of an elevator, walking instead of riding to work.

No gym near my place
This is another common reason why people don’t exercise. I don’t have a gym membership – I actually never had one. But that did not stop me from exercising. My workout routines are done at home. I find it more convenient for me. It’s a common misconception that you need a gym to be fit. Many gym owners will hate me for this, but I’ll say it anyway: you don’t need a gym membership to enjoy a healthy and fit body.

Here’s what you do:
1. Buy your own equipment. Start with a few dumb bells and simple and inexpensive exercise equipment.
2. Buy exercise DVDs and other similar tools. My wife has lots of yoga instruction DVD’s
3. Do exercises that don’t require expensive equipment. Running, stretching, jumping jacks and the like are good enough.

I don’t know what to do
This reason is a valid one. Many just don’t know what to do. But you can do something about this. In fact, you do exercise even if you’re not aware of it. Walking, carrying heavy things and similar activities offer great workout. However, you may be doing it wrong. So, educate yourself and start exercising.

Here’s what you do:
1. Consult fitness experts – they have blogs, videos and even seminars
2. Ask a friend who’s actively exercising
3. Go to gyms and ask around
4. Consult a fitness instructor

I’m not selling you anything – only the idea that you should exercise. It’s more than just getting sexy abs or burning fats. It’s about living a healthy life. There will always be reasons why people don’t exercise. But there are always ways to address them. The most important lesson that you can take home from this article is that you can start living a healthy and active life. No one is stopping you. Start exercising now.

Hi jpcmc, Thank for another great article. Walking is my favourite exrcise but I know I can do more.
