Rediscovering What Healthy is All About

It's not always all about losing weight and looking great...it's about getting healthy and staying healthy so you can be around for a long time!! I am rediscovering what healthy is all about...Won't you join me?

Health or Vanity - which is it for you?

Here we are in the middle of summer and if you are following the journey where are you with your weight loss goals? Are you there yet? Did you give up (I hope not) or are you still doing everything you can to get to where you want to be?

Let me ask you a question. If you are someone who is losing weight and working out to fit into a smaller size, is it because you want to look better or get healthy? I want to achieve both from my journey. Looking good is wonderful; I think deep down inside we all want to look good for ourselves and everyone else around us. It’s always nice to be the person who walks into the room that people are drawn to. It happens to me more when I’m in my best possible shape, however, I don’t think its due to my size or shape; I think it’s due to my attitude and how my mind changes when I’m looking and feeling good; I’m more confident, more vibrant, more energized and alert. I’ve heard many say you don’t get rid of your problems when you lose weight, you are still the same person inside and I agree. But you do take on a new found self-esteem/self-confidence and you do have more energy to do things you couldn’t do before. So even though I agree you can’t solve your problems by losing weight, I do not agree that it doesn’t change you, or at least me.

Good Health is very important

Health is also very important to me now. I can’t say I always wanted to eat healthy and exercise for health purposes before, it was simply for vanity – the outside. But now I’m interested on the inside too. I guess this comes with age and realizing how important health really is. Now when I eat healthfully it’s with more than one purpose in mind, health and looking and feeling good. I want it all!!!

It's okay to treat yourself

While on my journey I am learning some interesting things. First, it’s okay to have a splurge, treat or whatever you want to call eating unhealthy every now and then. It’s okay as long as you go back to eating healthy the next day or the next meal. Let’s face it, we are all human, and most of us, sad to say, were brought up on fattening, wonderful tasting foods; whether that be with too much oil, salt, gravy, too much fried food or too much sugar. Some of us were not and that’s great. Our parents didn’t do it on purpose, but nonetheless they did what their parents did. So at a young age we learned these foods are good or comfort foods or normal. Now it’s time to retrain the mind to learn what healthy looks like. Don’t get me wrong, I still eat prepared foods for lunch and some contain preservatives and that’s not so healthy either but I do watch the rest of the day.

Breakfast consists of a high fiber, whole grain cereal with ½ fruit and skim milk or egg whites.

Dinner is usually a lean meat such as chicken or fish, vegetables and sometimes another starch such as brown rice and a salad most of the time.

Snacks are usually fruits.

It's never to late to re-learn what healthy is

So I, too, am relearning what healthy really is. Remember, I should know nutrition and health inside and out but sometimes it just sits in the back of my mind, when it’s convenient of course. It reminds me of when I was growing up and my dad only heard my mom when he wanted to, when the conversation suited him. Selective hearing, selective healthy eating thoughts, same concept. When I choose to I know exactly what healthy means, then something gets put in front of me that is convenient, looks yummy and is low in calories and suddenly it’s healthy.

Even when we know the right things to do we sometimes don't do them.

I was a personal trainer, fitness counselor and practiced a lot of nutrition counseling as a Weight Watchers Leader so I know right from wrong. It’s not just about watching calories; it’s also about watching what we put in our bodies. So on my journey back to health I’m actually retraining my mind to keep health into perspective. Go figure. I am getting all I set out to achieve, even with the minor setbacks.

My goal is to lose the rest of the weight by the beginning of December. If I do it before, that’s – great. I’ll keep you posted of course.

Have a great day. Keep me posted.

Being healthy is not just about body size its about mental health too, I think people need to experience life (nature..) and I think when they do that too the weight will come off.

I have to admit that I use to work out strictly to keep my body in shape, but as I've gotten older, I realize that it helps my mental health just as much. I really notice it when I've gone off my program. Nice article....thanks for sharing your journey with us. It's helping me to remember to stay on track, too. :o)
