Joint pain tends to increase with age. Movement is very important for life and, despite joint pain, must continue. Some options to reduce joint pain are discussed.

As human beings age their joints tend to become painful and stiff. Western medicine refers to this as arthritis. There is a buffering substance between the bones where they join called cartilage which is designed to regenerate as we go through life. As people age the cartilage is not regenerated as quickly as it is being worn away resulting in more "bone on bone" contact. This is where the pain occurs. In extreme cases the person has surgery to replace the natural joint with an artificial one. Rather than reach that point a person should figure out ways to avoid joint damage.

Movement and joint pain

It is interesting to note that one of the common ways in which individuals handle the increased joint pain and stiffness is by limiting movement to avoid the feelings. However, that is one of the worst options. Lack of motion only further stiffens joints and makes for increased pain on movement. Exercise will actually benefit the joint as long as the type of exercise is not high impact.

Options to reduce joint pain

There are a number of causes of joint issues two of which are dehydration and inflammation. These can be reduced or eliminated thereby benefiting joint function.

Dehydration: Drinking water can help moisten joints, providing greater ease of movement. Most of the beverages the average American consumes actually enhance dehydration. Caffeine acts as a diuretic, therefore drinking caffeinated beverages such as sodas and coffee increase joint problems. Drink a minimum of 8-12 glasses of water daily, add a bit of lemon or lime for flavor if you prefer. Definitely increase this if you are exercising or use a lot of caffeinated drinks.
Inflammation: As well as being a major culprit in joint pain, it is also responsible for many other health conditions, so decreasing inflammation will not only benefit joint health, it will also reduce other health symptoms. There are several ways to decrease inflammation in the body. First, Omega 3 fatty acids are very beneficial. Fish oil and cod liver oil are great sources of omega 3s and will contribute to overall joint health.

Improved joint health

By handling these two aspects joint health can be improved. There are other possibilities for maintaining healthy joints. Following a healthy diet low in refined carbohydrates will also benefit both through decreased weight and less chance of insulin resistance.
