SCURVY

Deficiency of Vitamin-C causes Scurvy. We must find vitamins naturallly from our foods instead of buying them at medical stores.

Scurvy occupied its place even in early days.

In early days sailors who went on long voyage often died of SCURVY-a disease due to lack of fresh fruits and vegetables. Vasco-da-Gama, the Portuguese navigator, on his famous trip around Africa in 1497, lost one hundred men due to Scurvy. Other famous explorers too lost a large number of men because of this disease.

More than 200 years ago, English sailors found that they could not have Scurvy if on their voyages they drank the juice of limes or lemons. Drinking lime juice became so important in English ships that English sailors were nick-named ‘limeys.’ For a long time no one knew why lime juice prevents scurvy. Now, we know that limes and many other fresh fruits and vegetables have in them a remarkable substance called Vitamin C. Scurvy is caused due to lack of vitamin-C.

Scientists have found that there are many vitamins. They are all important in keeping us well and strong. Vitamin A prevents an eye disease called xerophthalmia; Vitamin-B prevents beriberi, Vitamin D- rickets and Niacin a disease called pellagra.

Vita in the word vitamin comes from the Latin word which means ‘life.’ The name was made by up by Casimir Funk, the Polish-born American scientist who first separated from food some pure vitamin.

Getting vitamins from foods is not easy because they are found in only very small amounts. The vitamin which Casimir Funk got was Thiamine or vitamin-B1. He got it from the outside covering of grains of rice. He discovered it in 1911.

We should get all the vitamins we need to keep us healthy. But, if we do not get enough from our food, we can now buy vitamins at the medical stores. However, it is better to depend mostly on foods for them. One reason is that in natural foods there may be some more vitamins which have not yet been discovered!!
