From time immemorial, humans discovered creative, albeit cruel, ways to harness the power of animals, from pulling a cart or carriage to carrying a load of goods, merchandise, and others, more often beyond their strength and endurance - Jamie SR Cortez

Beasts of Burden

In the grand scheme of things, humans are more inferior to the so-called lower animals such as dogs, horses, cows, elephants, to name a few. For one, they are submissive and ready to accept control or instruction. For another, they are endowed with a greater understanding of nature and can demonstrate unconditional love.

In contrast, humans have treated the animals in a most vicious and unkindly manner imaginable. This can typically be illustrated by them enslaving the animals first and when they have outlived their usefulness (e.g. when they get old), they are led to slaughter for the meat! This is true of domestic fowls, cattle and hogs, and the pack animals, among them the camels and horses.

Hold your Horses (and Donkeys and Mules)!

In primeval times, when means of transport was on foot, the discovery of a way to use animals, specifically the horse, assuming the wheel had already been invented and there existed the carriage fitted with two -- such a discovery by any one getting credit for it cannot in any way lessen the guilt for exploiting innocent sentient beings. For they were, and still are, not meant to be so exploited and abused.

It is hoped that the era of the enslavement of horses, for one, will end completely, although in developing countries like Asia, notably the Philippines, there can still be seen horses pulling a carriage called "Calesa" (calash) in Manila. Last we checked, they are now confined in tourist areas like Intramuros.

Horse-drawn carriage should soon be a thing of the past.

Elephants Do not Forget

"Nature's great masterpiece, an elephant; the only harmless great thing." -- John Donne

In the wilds these gentle giants pose no threat to humans. Conversely, it is humans that pose threats to themselves if and when they venture anywhere near their territory or lest they be crushed..

Kudos, by the way, to these organizations, PETA and PAWS which are notable refuge centers for mistreated animals where they have able personnel and concerned volunteers to carry out rescue operations where such cases arise.

Sacred Cows

Aside from being a source of meat and dairy, cows are also among the most exploited and oppressed in that they are also made to serve as transport of wares to be sold such as locally produced handicrafts, traveling over great distances and back.

Fortunately, Gandhi has this to say about cows, which incidentally are held sacred in some countries like India, Nepal, Egypt, and even in ancient Israel, Rome, Greece and Germany; according to Gandhi: "I worship it and I shall defend its worship against the whole world. The central fact of Hinduism is cow protection."

In countries, like the Philippines, carabaos (Water Buffalos) are still being pressed into service to plow or till the field and to transport people and crops, rendering the animals among the most abused in the areas of farming and agriculture. Modern tractors being relatively expensive, local farmers opt to use these animals.

The Doggone Sled and the Rickshaw

Even man's best friend is not spared from this human atrocity and slavery but what else is new considering that the dark chapters of history are replete with stories of man's inhumanity to man when they enslaved fellow humans they considered inferior to their race?

On the lighter side, it may be considered "poetic justice" from the standpoint of the pack animals featured here to also include this video of a man walking on a real "treadmill," as it were, which by the very nature of things is good for his or anyone's over-all physical health.

This is another awesome article on the abuse of animals of all kinds. In Ohio where I live they have passed a law called Goddard's Law that was put into place to protect animals. If someone harms an animal in any way they can be arrested. There's been so many cases of animal cruelty here in the City that I'm glad this law has been put into place. It's a very sad time when animals are abused by anyone. There were those that were starving their animals and leaving them in the hot sun on very hot days to die without a care for the animal. It is truly heartbreaking. One of these cases just happened this week and the man was arrested. Thanks for sharing this article with the world and congratulations on the gold
star. It is very well deserved.
