This article describes the major dental problem of tooth sensitivity, its symptoms, care and relief for this tooth problem.

What is Tooth Sensitivity?

Sensitive teeth can be an early warning sign of more serious dental problems that require your immediate attention!

If you experience a sharp pain when you eat or drink something hot or cold, know that it is a sign of sensitive teeth and this pain is caused by “Dentinal Sensitivity”.

Dentin, the middle layer of a tooth, is made up of tiny openings called tubules. Inside each tubule lies a nerve fibre that comes from the tooth’s pulp (the center of the tooth). The dentin is usually protected by the enamel. However,when this layer is exposed, cold or hot temperatures can affect these nerve fibres.

What causes Tooth Sensitivity?

-> Poor oral hygiene. This may allow tartar to build up at the gum line.

-> Receding gums that expose the tooth’s roots.

-> Brushing too hard. This wears away the enamel layer.

-> Frequently eating acidic foods or drinking acidic beverages.

-> An old filling with a crack or leak.

-> Untreated cavities.

-> Gum surgery that exposes a tooth’s roots.

To manage tooth sensitivity:

-> Use a good toothpaste specially formulated to reduce sensitivity such as Sensodyne or Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief.

-> Brush twice daily along with flossing.

-> Use a soft or ultra-soft toothbrush for brushing your teeth.

-> Use a desensitivising mouthwash for pain relief from tooth sensitivity.

-> Visit your dentist at least twice a year.
