Smoking does hurt everyone. While they may not all die with lung cancer or from a heart attack, their bodies are permanently damaged by smoking.

The Tale

1. If tobacco products are legal, how bad can they be? Adults smoke all the time.
2. Smoking doesn't hurt everyone, right?
3. Smoking is sexy.
4. Smokeless tobacco isn't as bad as cigars and cigarettes.
5. I can always quit later.
6. All the cool people smoke.
7. Low-tar, low-nicotine, or light cigarettes are safer than regulars.
8. Smoking helps you relax.
9. Smoking lets you be one of the gang.
10. I'm not hurting anyone but myself.

The Truth

Answer to #1. Not for those under 18. Tobacco is the only product in the U.S. proven to contain 43 known cancer-causing chemicals, and it is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. As to adult smoking, ask an adult smoker how old they were when they began smoking, and if they want their kids to smoke.
Answer to #2. Smoking does hurt everyone. While they may not all die with lung cancer or from a heart attack, their bodies are permanently damaged by smoking. Did you know that 5 million children alive today will die prematurely from smoking-related diseases? That's hurting a whole lot of people.
Answer to #3. Only if you think wheezing, coughing, bad breath, stained teeth, smelly hair and clothes, yellow-stained teeth and fingertips, frequent colds, and mouth sores and bleeding gums are sexy.
Answer to #4. There is no safe form of tobacco. Smokeless tobacco can cause mouth, cheek, throat, and stomach cancer.
Answer to #5. Yeah, right. I suppose you can eat only potato chip. Each year 430,700 smokers die of tobacco-related disease. But don't worry, every day 6,000 more teens will smoke their first cigarette and 3,000 will become regular smokers. People who begin smoking as teens are 10 times more likely to develop severe levels of nicotine addiction than those who start at a later age. Why do you think tobacco companies use youth, sexual attraction, and independence in their ads?
Answer to #6. Not true. More and more of Hollywood's cool people are speaking out against smoking. Actor Ted Danson, Esai Morales of NYPD Blue, Sean Penn, Boyz II Men, supermodel Christy Turlington, film star Pierce Brosnan, and Jeremy London from the TV show Party of Five, who were voted on the 50 Most Beautiful People of People magazine, are only a few of the cool people who don't smoke.
Answer to #7. Actually, no. The use of low-nicotine cigarettes makes smokers increase their smoking in order to get their "fix."
Answer to #8. Smoking does not help the body relax. Smoking increases the feelings of stress and nervousness. A good walk or chatting with friends will calm your nerves better than any drug.
Answer to #9. There is no such thing as a social smoker. Nicotine addiction is real and deadly. These aren't exceptions to the rule here. Just ask an adult who started smoking in their teens if they wished they'd never start smoking.
Answer to #10. So not true. Secondary smoke kills young children, adults, and even the family pet. Innocent people can and do die from the smoker's habit. Putting in money, tobacco-related diseases cost an estimated $75 billion a year for health care in the United States.

great article, especially as I stopped smoking 8 months ago without any assistance at all, no gum, no patches and no tablets, and I think it worked because I wanted to stop.
