Steps to Improve Family Fitness

The fitness of every member of your family is important. There are several steps you can take to make improvements to family fitness.

Overview

There is fast becoming an increased awareness of health and fitness issues. People are constantly being told what they should and shouldn't do in relation to their fitness levels. With this increased awareness, many people are altering their lifestyles to ensure that they are as fit as they can possibly be, or to at least minimize the damage that they have already subjected their bodies to. As parents, we want the best for our children and this includes their making sure that they are as fit and healthy as they can possibly be. If you are a parent, there are many ways in which you can ensure that you maintain and improve the fitness of both yourself, and that of other family members. Here are some resolutions that you can make to improve the fitness of your family.

Fruit and Vegetables

It is recommended that we include at least five portions of fruit and vegetables in our diet every day. This may sound difficult to do initially, but once you have changed your routine and adapted to your new eating habits, it is actually quite easy to do. By including one fruit or vegetable with breakfast, then again at lunch, two portions with dinner and a snack midday, you will soon have met the day’s target.

Exercise

By taking regular exercise, you will improve your fitness levels, maintain a good body weight and develop muscle tone. Exercise doesn't mean that you will have to drag your children off to the gym with you. Taking a walk as a family or going swimming once a week together are excellent ways to improve the whole family’s fitness levels and to spend time together as a family. You don’t even have to have a structured exercise program to exercise together as a family. Get a ball and have a kick around in the backyard together. This way your children won’t even notice that they are exercising, they’ll just be having fun as a family.

Cut Out Unhealthy snacks

It can be all too easy when you are hungry to reach for a chocolate bar or a packet of crisps to fight off those hunger pangs. Avoid doing this and save such astronomic delights for a treat at the weekend. Limiting the amount of these types of food in your diet will reduce the risk of obesity and associated health problems for both yourself and your children. By reducing sugary foods, you will also be reducing the risk of damaging your child’s dental health.
