Losing weight is difficult in a world filled with fast food restaurants and junk food. However, you can take small steps to lose weight and keep it off for good by following these simple tips.

Drink More Water

Every January, millions of people make a New Year's resolution to lose weight. Despite their best intentions, most people give up before the month is over. However, these same people could actually keep their resolution if they take small steps to lose weight. Here are some easy ways to help people lose weight forever.
Drinking more water is one small step to lose weight. Try to drink six to eight glasses of water each day. Many people think they're hungry when they're actually thirsty. Instead of reaching for a snack, reach for a glass or bottle of water.

Don't Deprive Yourself

One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to lose weight is going on a strict diet. They actually set themselves up for failure by swearing that they will never again eat their favorite foods such as chocolate, dessert or ice cream. Then, they find themselves craving whatever food they have denied themselves. The more they deny themselves, the more obsessed they become. This usually ends in disaster such as eating a whole carton of ice cream at once.
Instead, allow yourself to continue eating your favorite foods but in smaller portions. Portion control is one of the main principles of Weight Watchers. You can eat almost anything you want on the Weight Watchers plan but in smaller portions, according to Weight Watchers.
In addition to not depriving yourself, you should also plan for special occasions which revolve around food such as holidays. For example, on Thanksgiving morning, many people walk or run on a track near my house. They know they're going to eat too much turkey and pumpkin pie but they're exercising more to compensate for the extra calories.
When I get the urge for ice cream, I walk approximately one mile to an ice cream shop. Then, I walk back and burn off the extra calories as I go.

Take it Slow

A big mistake many people make when trying to lose weight is setting their goals too high. They try a fad diet and vow to lose 10 to 20 lbs in a week or two. They set themselves up for failure because they're moving too fast and setting unrealistic goals.
Going slow is key when you take small steps to lose weight. Set more realistic goals such as losing one to two pounds a week or even a half pound per week. Losing just a half pound a week means you'll be 26 pounds lighter in a year.
Some people find success by focusing on one small goal at a time. For example, they try to lose two pounds this month followed by another two pounds the next month and so on. Losing just two pounds isn't as overwhelming as trying to lose 10 lbs all at once. The slower you lose the weight, the more likely you are to keep it off.
Another tip: don't step on the scale every day. If you do, you'll get discouraged. Instead, weigh yourself once a week.

Lean on Me

Look for someone to lean on as you take small steps to lose weight. Get your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend, relative or friend on board with you. You can each serve as the other's cheerleader and exercise partner. The more support you have, the more successful you'll be with losing weight.
If you follow these steps, you will make small but powerful changes in how you live. You'll be healthier, and you'll no longer have to worry about making New Year's resolutions to lose weight.

Add to that list -- reduce stress and get enough sleep! Those are the things that are hardest for me. Good article!
