Teeth is a calcified, whitish structure found in the jaws of many vertebrates used to breakdown food. Some animals use it for hunting and defensive purposes. The teeth are covered with gums at the cervical 3rd of the tooth.

Parts of teeth

Let's divide the tooth into 2 portions:
1) The crown portion: above the gums
2) The root portion: below the gums and in the bone
In the crown, the teeth consists of 3 parts :
1)The first and outer most part: Enamel
2)The second part: Dentin
3) The third and inner most part: Coronal Pulp
In the root ,the teeth consists of 3 parts:
1) The outermost portion of root: Cementum
2) The second part: Dentin
3) The inner part: Radicular Pulp

Types of teeth

An Adult human being consists of 32 teeth: 2 incisors, 1 canine, 2 premolars and 3 molars in each quadrant. The human teeth formula :2123/2123 on each side.

A young human being consists of 20 teeth( baby teeth): 2 incisors, 1 canine and 2 molars in each quadrant. The young human teeth formula:212/212 on each side.

Tooth-Bone attachment apparatus

The tooth is attached to the alveolar bone through a series of fibres, otherwise called as the periodontal fibres. This type of joint between tooth and alveolar bone is called "Gomphosis".
The periodontal ligament or abbreviated as PDL is a group of specialized connective tissue fibres that attach the tooth to the alveolar bone.
The PDL fibres are categorised according to orientation and location along the tooth:
1)Alveolar crest fibres
2)Horizontal fibres
3)Oblique fibres
4)Apical fibres
5)Interradicular fibres
The gingival or gum fibres consist of:
1)Dentogingival fibres
2)Circular fibres
3)Transseptal fibres
a)semicircular fibres
b)transgingival fibres

Contents of the pulp

Pulp is the centre most part of the tooth. The shape of pulp corresponds to the overall shape of the tooth
The pulp contains the nerves ( plexus of rashkow) ,blood vessels and lymph vessels.
Any irritation in the form of decay or trauma can transmit infections to the pulp and into the bone, thereby causing abscess (pus),cyst and in absence of treatment even progress to tumors.

Conclusion

Teeth is an organ consisting of the pulp.It consists of a complex system of blood vessels and nerves.
Dental pain caused by the infections of pulp is said to be the 2nd most painful disease.
As said by an unknown author: No person present or past has been patient enough to bear the pangs of dental pain.
