Teeth are the vital ornaments of the face. The sparkling white teeth enhance the beauty of your smile. Hence, it is important that you take care of your teeth preventing tooth decay.

Tooth decay

Tooth decay is the destruction of tooth structure which can affect both the enamel, the outer coating of the tooth, and the dentin layer of the tooth. It occurs when particles of foods containing carbohydrates, such as breads, cereals, milk, soda, fruits, cakes, or candy are left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth digest these food particles, turning them into acids. All these cling to the teeth and dissolve the enamel surface of the teeth, creating holes in the teeth called cavities. This decay causes pain, sometimes unbearable.

Ten tips to prevent tooth decay

1) Learning good oral habits

Children have to be taught habits of caring teeth from early stage of their life. Parents should help their children fight off tooth decay by teaching them good oral health habits. Parents should be exemplary in teaching tooth habits. Make sure your child brushes and flosses twice a day, especially in the morning and at night before going to bed. They should watch if their children brush the entire surface area of the teeth.

2) Awareness of eating sweets

Sweets and children are inseparable. But the children should be taught good manners of eating them. They should properly wash their teeth after enjoying their sweets. Frequent consumption of sweets can lead to cavities and toothache. Hard sweets can be dangerous to teeth. When they are chewed they can pull out fillings and dental restorations.

3) Brushing teeth

Brushing teeth at least twice a day with fluoride-containing toothpaste is very important; especially, after each meal and before going to bed. A fluoride tooth-paste helps strengthen the resistance of the against tooth decay. The tooth brush should be changed every three months.

4) Herbal tools

There are a lot of herbs that help tooth care. Herbal rinse that contains goldenseal, Echinacea or tea tree oil to prevent and heal inflamed gums and kill bacteria is very helpful.

5) Teeth coating

A dentist helps to have plastic protective coating called dental sealant which is applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth (molars) to protect them from decay.

6) Drink fluoridated water

Drinking at least a pint of fluoridated water each day is needed to protect children from tooth decay. This will protect their teeth from many problems.

7) Diet good for tooth

Eat vegetables and fruits that help tooth health. Eat foods high in calcium such as broccoli, leafy vegetables, sardines, milk and fortified orange juice. Every meal can be ended with a fruit, such as apple, which can clean your teeth.

8) An immediate remedy for toothache

Clove is considered as one of the best remedies for toothache. Use of clove gives immediate relief to toothache. It contains antiseptic properties to decrease infection. Clove oil is applied to the cavity in a decayed tooth.

9) Air abrasion

Nowadays a new technique called ‘Air abrasion’ provides an alternative for the traditional dental drill and rapidly removes the tooth decay. It is recommended for deep cavities.

10) Regular check up

Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exam is a necessary health care of teeth. Detection of early decay on the tooth groove is very essential.
