No matter how we spend our days, what we do for work, or who we interact with on a daily basis, we all encounter some form of stress. Stress can be debilitating for some people, and the prospect of confronting it at work or at school can be difficult, especially if it’s for reasons beyond our control.

Introduction

I’ve always been rather good at dealing with stress, because I assess every situation and try to ascertain exactly what is causing me concern. We often get stressed about things as a result of many little aspects which build up gradually to boiling point. Taking the crucial time to relieve some stress can help bring some perspective to the situation, as well as help us understand more about what it is that’s stressing us out.

Everyone has their unique ways of relaxing, but if you’re looking for a new approach, here’s a few methods you can try.

Meditation

Meditating takes some patience, but it also makes us realise how little time we have in our lives to truly switch off from all external factors and concentrate on our own thoughts and feelings. If you can find the time each day to switch of the TV, laptop, and iPhone to meditate, you may find yourself in a much better place. Find somewhere you can relax and not be disturbed for optimal results.

Mediating can be done alone, but also in the company of others in the form of Yoga. Yoga is a form of mediation which promotes the ideals of a meditative state, but also combined with elements of fitness.

Playing Video Games

A recent study suggests that playing videogames are an effective outlet for stress, so much so that the effects of violent videogames are now believed to be more beneficial for a developing mind as opposed to harmful. I’m not much of a gaming person, but I’ve seen first-hand the therapeutic qualities of certain video games as a mechanisms for coping with and solving problems.

The ability to exercise our cognitive facilities comfortably is important to maintaining a healthy outlook and mind-set. Videogames can offer the perfect challenge to our brains and can help us work out other issues related to stress in the meantime. Sometimes, a healthy distraction is the best answer

Eating

Some people denote stress-eating as a negative personality trait, but I believe that eating food during a stressful period is good for the soul and can help us relax in multiple ways. Firstly, eating can help our mental wellbeing; in many situations a lack of food can impair our cognitive abilities and cause us to stress out more. Secondly, eating food we enjoy released endorphins into the brain and can help us feel more positive form a biological perspective.

Everyone should have their designated comfort food to help in times of need. If I’m feeling sad or stressed, I usually dig into some homemade Macaroni and Cheese to hep perk me up again. Whatever it is you’re craving, treat yourself and maybe even pig out a little bit.

Pampering Yourself

Sometimes the simple solution is to pamper yourself, whether you feel like taking on a full days’ worth of attention and care at a spa, or simply loading up on spa skincare products and pampering yourself at home. Many peoples’ stresses stem from things in relation to their appearance, so what better way to relieve some stress than to take some time caring for our looks.

But don’t just stop there; to truly pamper yourself, throw in elements of everything you enjoy, such as your favourite foods, a tipple you may enjoy, and spend some time engaging in an activity that will make you feel better.

Good points thanks Nathalie.

I de-stress by looking at others who live day-to-day, but still able to find meaning and purpose in life. I also count the blessings - what I have than what I don't - siva
