Know the most common types of arthritis and treatment options.

The most common types of arthritis

According to a medical doctor arthritis is a chronic disease that causes pain, swelling and limited movement in joints and connective tissues throughout the body. The two most common types of arthritis: Osteoarthritis and Rheumotoid arthritis. According to a medical doctor, Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that mostly affects the cartilage and is caused by wear and tear. People who use a lot of their knees, who stand up for long periods, those who are old, bow-legged and obese are at risk, says a medical doctor.

In Osteoarthritis, the surface layer in the cartilage breaks down and wears away. This allow bones under the cartilage to rub together, causing pain, loss of motion of the joint and swelling. The joint may loss it's normal shape over time.

Rheumotoid arthritis (RA) is more damaging than Osteoarthritis. It is a form of arthritis that causes inflammation in the lining of the joints and occasionally in other internal organs, It tends to persist for years, affecting many different joints throughout the body and ultimately can cause damage to the cartilage, bone, ligaments and tendons.
Rheumotoid arthritis is described as an autoimmune disease. With a faulty natural immune system, it results in the immune system attacking joint tissue, and causing inflammation and subsequent joint damage.

Treatment Options

It should be understood that there are no cure of both Osteoarthritis and RA, the goals of therapy are to relieve pain and inflammation, retard disease progression, prevent work disability and enhance quality of life.
Treatment options for Osteoarthritis include:
- Exercise to keep joints flexible and improve muscle strength.
- Heat/cold therapy for temporary pain relief
- Weight control to prevent extra stress on weight-bearing joints.
- Joint protection to prevent strain or stress on painful joints.
- Medications to control pain such as nonopioid and simple analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)
- Surgery to relieve chronic pain in damaged joints

Rheumatoid arthritis treatment
The recommendation is early use of disease-modifying drugs which are of types: systomatic medications and disease-modifying medications.
Commonly known medication ibuprofen and mefenamic are classified as NSAIDs, still the most widely prescribed drugs for arthritis pain and inflammation however, they can cause stomach pain or upsets and gastrointestinal bleeding says a medical doctor.

Very informative article.
I have witnessed a good friend of mine that suffered throughout his life with arthritis.
It is so sad to see what it does to a person.
Thanks for sharing.
