The Different Varieties of Anxieties

There are many different types of anxiety disorders and many people who have them. A look at six of the most common ones. What are the symptoms and how are they treated?

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a state of fear or apprehension. We all suffer from anxiety now and then. When it is a constant state and takes over our lives, it becomes a disorder. It is estimated that around 10 percent of people around the world have clinical anxiety.

Panic disorder

A common anxiety disorder is Panic Disorder. Those who suffer from this disorder have panic attacks or sudden attacks of fear lasting about ten minutes and sometimes longer. The attacks feel like the sufferer is losing control or having a heart attack. He or she may avoid places where they have had a panic attack. They constantly worry about having another one.

Panics attacks seem to run in families. Other than that, researchers are not really sure why some people have them.

Some symptoms of Panic Disorder are a pounding heart, weakness, sweating, dizziness, breathing problems, feeling very hot or very cold, chest pain, stomach pain or numb hands. The symptoms usually start in adolescence. Some people may have one or two panic attacks but never develop Panic Disorder.

Obsessive compulsive disorder

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD is an anxiety disorder which involves obsessions, or disturbing thoughts, and compulsions. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or rituals. A sufferer of OCD will do the same thing over and over again like washing their hands or checking the stove to see if it's turned off.

The symptoms of OCD usually start in childhood are the early teens. The symptoms may come or go.

Some of the symptoms are: having repeated thoughts about frightening things, forbidden things or cleanliness. Repeated acts like washing hands, locking and unlocking doors, saying the same words or phrases over and over again.

Post traumatic stress disorder

Post traumatic stress disorder or Ptsd usually affects people who have been through some traumatic event such as war, rape or a physical attack. It may also happen to someone who was close to a victim of a very traumatic event. The sufferer feels extreme fear long after the event has passed even though they are no longer in danger. Some victims of this disorder may have constant nightmares. Others may feel emotionally numb.

Symptoms of Ptsd are reacting to triggers that are reminders of the traumatic experience, avoiding places which remind the victim of the event, guilt feelings and or depression.

Social anxiety disorder

People with Social anxiety disorder or SAD have an intense fear of social situations. People with this disorder have a fear of embarrassment or of being judged. They have an intense fear of being around people. Performing everyday acts such as signing checks in front of people or eating in public can be terrifying for them.

Social anxiety disorder usually begins in childhood. It tends to run in families. Researchers do not know why it develops.

Symptoms of SAD are being anxious around people and have a hard time talking to them, worrying about a social event weeks in advance, and staying away from places where there are people.

Generalized anxiety

Generalized anxiety is being worried and frightened about everything. Victims are aware that these fears are unrealistic but they have no control over them. They find it extremely difficult to get through the day, convinced that something will go wrong.

Generalized anxiety usually runs in families. Symptoms of this disorder are: having trouble sleeping, not being able to concentrate, worrying about everything even when there is no reason to, not being able to do tasks because of inability to focus.

Specific phobias

Phobias are unrealistic, irrational fears of things that are not actual dangers. There are a countless amount of phobias. Agoraphobia, or fear of not being able to escape somewhere outside usually results in the sufferer not being able to leave their home. Acrophobia is the fear of heights. Claustrophobia is the fear of being in tight spaces. Zoophobia is a fear of a specific type of animal. The list goes on and on.

Phobias seem to run in families and are thought to stem from early life events.

The symptoms of a phobia are panic, fright, shaking, sweating trouble breathing and rapid heartbeat when confronted by the specific phobia.

Treatment for anxieties.

All of the anxiety disorders are treatable by psychotherapy and cognitive behavior therapy as well as certain medications. Phobias have been successfully treated with desensitization or gradual exposure to be situation that causes the phobia, resulting in lessening the fear more and more during a course of time.

The medications used in treating anxiety include anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs and beta-blockers.

Anxiety a wide spread problem

Millions of people suffer from anxiety disorders. Generalized anxiety disorder is the world's biggest mental health problem. Education can help bring attention to a serious problem that affects about 10 percent of the population. We are living in world where anxiety is rampant.

Try music, dancing, singing and meditation. I do this and it has helped me a lot. I have been diagnosed with Stress Anxiety Disorder due to past history of Domestic Violence.

Informative article. I thought SAD was seasonal affective disorder -- being depressed due to lack of sun in wintertime. I'm sure both exist, it's just odd that two disorders have the same acronym.
