Heart failure occurs when the heart loses its ability to pump enough blood through the body. Heart failure does not mean that your heart has stopped working or that you are having a heart attack. Rather, heart failure usually develops slowly, often over the years as the heart gradually loses its pumping ability and works less efficiently.

Heart Failure

Some people may not become aware of their condition until symptoms appear years after their heart began to decline. Hypertensive heart disease occurs when hypertension causes the walls of the lower left heart chamber (left ventricle) to become thick and stiff, which affects heart pumping ability. This may in turn lead to heart failure.
• The term Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) is often used to described all patients with heart failure. In reality, congestion (build up of fluid) is just one feature of the condition and does not occur in all patients.

Symptoms Of Heart Failure
These depend on the duration and severity of the condition. If you experience any of these symptoms, see your doctor for proper diagnosis: Leg swelling, breathlessness, tiredness, chronic cough, palpitation (you can you’re your heart beats so vividly), decreased exercise tolerance and difficulty, breathing in bed.

Signs of heart failure: In general, the following physical signs suggest a diagnosis of heart failure: Swollen neck veins, congested lungs, edema, rapid weight gain and confusion.

The assessment: The doctor will determine the overall functional capacity of the patient involved. These include: Physical capabilities, emotional status, social support and cognitive abilities. Further investigations are as follows: Chest X-ray, Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Echocardiogram.

Treatment methods may include salt and alcohol restriction, use of diuretics, ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, vitamin consideration and cardiac rehabilitation exercise training. Always consider prevention as the best option.
