"We are taught that suffering is the one promise life always keeps, so that if happiness comes along we know it as a precious gift which is ours only for a short time."

My Husband, Matt (Norman).

My husband estranged, remote and ill at ease,
Came home, tired and traumatized looking for release,
Now suffering from the constant memories of war
Never released from horrors, he could not forget.

I always held out hopes that he would find some peace,
A damaged child who grew up and enlisted for the war.
He returned but there was no safe place even in his home
His mind tormented with memories he could only bear alone.

In Memory of Matt (Norman R. Matthews)

Matt's Certificate from the President
I have just received Matt's (Norman R. Matthew's) certificate and would like to present it here in his memory.

Thanks to all of you for your kind and supportive comments.

28th Apr 2012 (#) You are right... There is little anyone can say.... Nothing said (or done) can change what happened or assuage the grief of loss. I am sad for you and hope that you can find some support and comfort in the hearts and arms of friends and loved ones.
My heartfelt condolences,
David Delete this comment Approve this comment Reply to this comment

28th Apr 2012 (#) I will be the first to honour him, your Mat, for a just war he was born to live his life with fighting for his country and for the world.

It is good his suffering has ended in this world, now resting in the arms of God, content his bravery had not been in vain equally as his bravery with his lovely bereaved wife, Ivyevelyn, bore them both a daughter, and a grandson named Charleston.

May he rest in peace! Love and hugs, Buzz Delete this comment Approve this comment Reply to this comment

29th Apr 2012 (#) I should have added that Matt suffered from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Doctor's medications and therapy failed to give relief and he tried to self-medicate which can only end in disaster. Delete this comment Approve this comment Reply to this comment

Eyes if a Vietnam Veteran.

His eyes show hidden memories of traumas from the past,
For him the war never came to a calm and peaceful end.
When you see his face then you must know as well I
He was forever tormented, Jesus saved him, he did not die.

The last words he spoke to me were, "I need to rest".
When I tried to wake him, his soul had already left.
He looked at peace then, no sign of sorrow or pain,
I knew he could not see me and would never breathe again..

Matt Died on April 12th, 2012.

Matt was buried with full military honors on April 23rd at 12:30 P.M.
In the Veterans' Memorial Cemetary, Houston, Texas.
Taps sounded by my friend and neighbour, Bob Woodburn.

Matt's Certificate from the President was recently received by me.
