Enduring peace on earth has eluded mankind from inception. This article takes a look at what is actually peace and those factors militating against it, including of course the panacea for real peace.

Peace: What is it

It will be wise to start this piece with concise definition of what peace constitutes. And we will do this by turning to the Wikipedia encyclopedia for the definition.
It defines peace as '' a state of harmony characterized by the lack of violent conflict, commonly understood as the absence of hostility. Peace also suggests the existence of healthy or newly healed interpersonal or international relationships, prosperity in matters of social or economic welfare, the establishment of equality, and a working political order that serves the true interest of all - - - ''

The question is; has man since from inception been able to achieve peace going by the definition above? The answer is definitely No. This is the reason why the search for peace have been an on going process, that seems to have become intractable in modern times. In search for peace, we have sensitized, created awareness, and for those who are religious, we have preached, prayed, meditated and in extreme cases wars have been fought to usher in peace, but yet still, the more we lack it and the more it continues to elude mankind.

Definitely, we can not have peace, when there is a gulf of inequality in the system, we can not have peace, when there is no equal right and justice, we can not have peace, when we must trample on others to succeed in life, we can not have peace, when we slander and plot for the down fall of a fellow man for material gain, we can not have peace, when we allow hatred to cloud our sense of reasoning, we can not have peace, when we show disregard for the right and properties of others, we can not have peace, when we believe that our heritage entitles us to monopolize the resources of nature, we can not have peace, when we regard our selves as superior to others, we can not have peace, the moment we stop being our brothers/sisters keepers, we can not have peace when we believe that the God we conceive is the one others must accept, we can not have peace, when we enthrone selfishness and greed in our daily dealings with our fellow men, we can not have peace, when we continue spilling blood for positions and the lure of power.

Yes, mankind must come to the basic understanding that peace is not something that can be constructed from without, it can not be enforced, it has to start from within, from the minds and hearts of humanity to take roots. Let it dawn on man, that we are all extensions of one another, interwoven in one common destiny. This is the fact of our common existence, and that is just the way it has to be. Man must follow this path to secure peace or continue wandering in the wilderness of illusion.
