Leukemia is the cancer of the blood. It arises due to uncontrollable growth of abnormal white blood cells in the bone marrow to form leukemia cells. There are several treatment options for this disease depending on certain vital factors

Leukemia

Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow and the blood cells. The disease is characterized by the uncontrollable growth of blood cells in the bone marrow. The white blood cells grow abnormally to form leukemia cells. This condition worsens when the leukemia cells spread to other parts of the body such as the brain and the lymph. Leukemia cells are not able to carry out the normal function of the white blood cells in the body. The treatment and management of leukemia are dependent on several factors such as the type of leukemia, the degree of the condition, the age of the patient and on the features of the leukemia cells. The treatment options available for leukemia patient include: biological therapy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplant, surgery or a combination of these treatment options.

Types of Leukemia

Leukemia can be categorized as acute or chronic depending on how fast it progress to symptomatic stage. It can also be categorized as either lymphocytic if it affects the lymphocytes or myelogenous if it affects the myelocytes. Myelocytes and lymphocytes are types of white blood cells. Base on these categories, the four main types of leukemia are as follows: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), and Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML).

Leukemia treatment option: Biological and Targeted Therapy

Biological therapy involves enabling the immune system to recognize and destroy leukemia cells. Biological therapy aims at enhancing the natural defense system of the body against the disease. One common form of Biological therapy is the use of monoclonal antibodies which are usually administered intravenously to kill leukemia cells or to boost the immune system. Targeted therapy is whereby a targeted drug delivery system is used to target specific leukemia cells and destroy them. Targeted drug therapy utilizes drugs to inhibit the growth of leukemia cells.

leukemia treatment option: Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy uses high energy radiations such as X-rays to damage leukemia cells and stop their growth. Radiation can either be directed to a specific place within the body that has leukemia cells or the whole body can be subjected to radiation. Radiation is also employed in identification and tagging of leukemia cells prior to treatment.

leukemia treatment option: Stem Cell Transplant

Stem cell transplant refers to the replacing of a cancerous bone marrow with a healthy bone marrow. A high dose of chemotherapy or radiation therapy is administered to destroy the cancerous bone marrow before the actual transplant. Then an infusion of blood-forming stem cells that help in replenishing the bone marrow with viable and healthy stem cells is

An overview of leukemia treatment

Leukemia treatment option depends on several factors such as the type of leukemia. Treatment should only be done when the symptoms of the disease are manifesting to avoid the side effects associated with a particular treatment. People who are suffering from a chronic type of leukemia have to wait for symptoms to appear before starting treatment. This period is known as the watchful waiting.
