The difference between stress and anxiety

People often confuse stress with anxiety but they are different. We all have stress and stress can be good for us. Anxiety is a negative emotional and can become chronic.

Stress and anxiety is not the same thing

Montrealers often think that stress and anxiety are the same thing; but they are not. Stress can be good or it can be negative. Working too hard and getting exhausted is caused by negative stress, but planning for your wedding day, something that makes you happy is often considered good stress. As for negative stress it can be caused by things that make you feel bad such as losing a job. However, as previously stated stress is a part of normal life and any changes in your life will cause some kind of stress good or bad.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is definitely bad, it can be described as apprehension, worry, nervousness or fear. Montrealers who awaited the news from the polytechnique shooting were definitely anxious and rightfully so.

They knew their children went to that school, but did not know if their girls were one of the 14 women who were shot and killed by a crazed sniper. This kind of worry is justified, but it still brings on anxiety. This type of anxiety can bring on other disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder. This kind of anxiety does not go away quickly.

Stress can go away quickly but anxiety can become chronic

On the other hand, regular negative stress can go away as soon as the trigger is gone. For example, if the stress was caused by your husband or child coming home late, once they are home and safe your stress is gone. Anxiety can linger on and become a chronic condition.
