More than the inexplicable phenomena occurring in our surroundings, there is a wealth of strange things that happen in our bodies and in our minds. Among these are phobias.

Phobias

There are many unexplainable things in this world. More than the inexplicable phenomena occurring in our surroundings, there is a wealth of strange things that happen in our bodies and in our minds.

Among these are phobias. Phobias have been a puzzles for many experts and are mostly attributed to traumatic experiences experienced by the person either during childhood or even well onto their adulthood. This intense fear of what are considered harmless objects, events, and situations greatly affects the lives of many people and their loved ones.

Phobias could come in many forms, some stranger than others. Most are probably familiar with agoraphobia, the fear of spiders, and claustrophobia, the fear of enclosed spaces. These popular phobias are actually very understandable, but there are some that simply boggles the mind!

Let’s do a countdown of what I think are the top five strangest phobias:

5. Ebulliophobia—the fear of bubbles.

Who would have thought that that a harmless little bubble could cause so much emotional pain to a person. Usually a result of a bad childhood experience, ebulliophobia can make daily living difficult, especially if the kind of bubbles feared is soap bubbles. No baths then?

4. Ergasiophobia—the fear of work.

Although this may sound like a good excuse not to work for many, sufferers of ergasiophobia would beg to differ. In a world of “No work, no pay,” this is a big problem, especially since having this phobia is sometimes an indication of other psychological disorders such as depression.

3. Nomophobia—the fear of no mobile contact.

In an age of high-technology and advancement, connectivity seems to be everything. This 21st century fear has been observed to develop mostly among city dwellers who rely heavily on their phones for contact with family and friends. The feeling of "disconnection" of people with this kind of phobia can be paralyzing to say the least.

2. Pentheraphobia—the fear of the mother-in-law.

Well, maybe someone reading this could relate! So it seems that the popular notion of fearing the in-laws isn’t just hype, it’s actually a condition! Although it may be a joke to some, this phobia can actually affect a lot of marriages and would need to be addressed. Hmmm… constant exposure to the mom-in-law as cure, then?

1. Ithyphallophobia—the fear of an erect penis.

Surprisingly, there are increasing number of people suffering from an intense fear of an erect penis. Yes, you heard it right. The fear extends to object with a phallic shape and just the actual thing itself. Sufferers of this disorder can take years to recover, some even requiring institutionalization and reportedly needing repeated exposure to the object of their fear for them to overcome it.

Funny? Not really...

There are numerous phobias that people suffer from, and sure, we could throw a few jokes here and there. But even if they may seem funny and unbelievable, what those who suffer them need the most is an understanding and nonjudgmental society.

So let's do our part. Be understanding and don't make their lives more difficult than it already is. Be kind.

Among the listed five, Ergasiophobia seems to be the weirdest of all.

And I wonder it is very difficult to choose the top five from the numerous phobias!
