Clogged nose, blocked nose, runny nose – it’s the common cold. The common cold is a viral infection of our upper air passages. The mucous membranes lining our nose and our throat are inflamed. Do you know that there are over 200 cold viruses to immune ourselves with? When you cough or sneeze or make a direct contact with another person, you can easily spread the virus.

Cause and Symptoms

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include cough, headache, sore throat, hoarseness, congested or runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, body aches, chills, malaise and mild fever.

The Cause

Cold viruses infect the upper air passages of our body.

The viral infection may spread causing acute bronchitis, laryngitis, earache, sinusitis, tracheitis and secondary bacterial infection. It can aggravate existing respiratory disorders like asthma, chronic bronchitis and chronic ear infections.

The infection can also reactivate the virus that causes cold sores.

What you can do

1. Drink plenty of water. Hot fluids are better.

2. Have some hot chicken soup.

3. Stop all activities and have plenty of rest.

4. Keep yourself warm.

5. Gargle.

6. Take vitamin C.

7. Quit smoking.

8. Always have a positive attitude.

9. Inhale steam to loosen nasal congestion and to easily expulse mucus. You can use nose sprays or drops but not for long.

10. Frequently blow your nose. Block only one nostril at a time to prevent the phlegm from getting into your sinuses and infecting them.

If symptoms persist for more than 10 days or become worse, time now to consult your doctor.

How to prevent

Do not go to crowded places. It is easier to catch the virus there. Keep yourself healthy with a balanced diet. Exercise regularly.
