Health bodies like Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration deserves commendations for doing its job. Its finding is a big help in guarding the health and well being of all people, especially children, from the dangers of taking in excess pesticide residue hiding in fruits and vegetables.

Excess pesticide residue

Unsafe levels of pesticide residue in some farm products imported from Japan has been found said Taiwan health authorities.
They were detected in strawberries and green tea products.
Pesticide residue exceeding legal limits was detected in fresh strawberries imported from Fukuoka Prefecture in December, as well as in green tea leaves, green tea powder, green tea milk powder and red tea powder imported from Tokyo and Kyoto, Shizuoka and Aichi prefectures, disclosed Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration Thursday on its website.
Questionable products will be shipped back to Japan or destroyed in Taiwan said Ministry authorities.
Taiwan has strengthened inspection efforts following a series of food safety scandals involving alcohol, milk, soy sauce, rice and cooking oil.

Rid fruits and vegetables of pesticide residue

Fruits and vegetables bought from stores may contain pesticides. To produce them in large quantities, farmers prefer to use pesticides to eradicate insects, rodents, mold and bacteria. Indeed pesticides help farmers, but they pose also health risks to people, especially children.
Nervous, stomach, endocrine or internal secretion, and hormonal problems have been linked to pesticides
For the enjoyment of a healthful diet and a healthy body, learn how to rid your fruits and vegetables of pesticide residue.

1) Buy organic fruits and vegetables when possible to avoid pesticide residue.
2) Know which fruits and vegetables pose the highest risk for pesticide residue if you can’t buy organic produce.

  • According to the Environmental Working Group, buying organic food can lower pesticide residue by about 90%. They produced two lists of fruits and vegetable, the ‘Clean 15’ and the ‘Dirty Dozen’ to classify which readily absorb pesticides and retain them, so even if washed, they will still have noticeable levels of residues. The ability of a fruit or vegetable to retain or repel pesticides is dependent on its outer shell or protective layer. Fruits such as strawberries are more likely to absorb and retain pesticides than pineapples are.

  • Clean 15
  • asparagus
  • avocados
  • cabbage
  • cantaloupe
  • corn
  • eggplant
  • grapefruit
  • kiwi fruit
  • mango
  • mushrooms
  • onions
  • papayas
  • pineapples
  • sweet peas (frozen)
  • sweet potatoes

  • Dirty Dozen

  • apples
  • celery
  • cherry tomatoes
  • cucumbers
  • grapes
  • hot peppers
  • nectarines (imported)
  • peaches
  • potatoes
  • spinach
  • strawberries
  • sweet bell peppers
  • plus collard greens and kale
  • plus summer squash and zucchini
  • Rid fruits and vegetables of pesticide residue (con't)

    3) Thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables prior to eating them
    4) Soak and wash your produce with a commercial produce wash to remove pesticide residue from fruits and vegetables.
    5) Make your own produce wash to remove pesticide residue from fruits and vegetables.
    • This can be made by mixing one teaspoon of sea salt per cup of water or by diluting vinegar with water.
    • Soak fruits and vegetables in the mixture, then rinse
    6) Peel the skin off fruits and vegetables when possible.
    7) Shop at local farmers' markets or produce stands.
    • Local growers use less pesticides and are also more likely to grow organically. Their produce is often picked fresh.
    8) Grow your own fruits and vegetables.
    • When produce comes out of your own garden or back yard, you know exactly what you are putting into your body.
