Our body needs various balance nutrients for good health. Aside from vitamins, minerals are also essential for the body’s normal health and growth. What are minerals? These are elements that originate in the Earth like the plants and cannot be made by living organisms. Direct minerals comes from vegetables that we eat while other minerals comes from indirect sources like the animals.

Various Minerals Needed by our Body

Here is a short list of minerals and its functions to our body:

Selenium helps to fight the effects of free radicals and plays an important role in thyroid hormone metabolism. It increases body immune system and also important in prostate health. Free radicals are the opponents of the body that lowers the immune system and brings various illnesses. Some of these free radicals are stress, radiation from the sun, pollution, synthetic chemicals from certain foods. Food sources for selenium are red meat, whole grains, poultry, and fish.

Zinc. A component of hundreds of enzymes, zinc is involved in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. Zinc acts as an antioxidant, it aids in developing healthy bone structure, healthy immune function, and good vision, and also helps during pregnancy that supports normal fetal growth. Food sources for zinc are beef liver, poultry and seafood.

Iodine is a crucial component in the production of thyroid hormones. Supplemental iodine is especially important for people on a vegetarian diet, those who avoid seafood, or those who must restrict their salt intake. Food sources for iodine are fish, seafood, and sea vegetables.

Vanadium helps retain healthy thyroid function, slow down the formation of cholesterol in the blood that prevents heart disease. It also helps prevent tooth decay. Take note of the amount of vanadium intake, high quantities may cause manic depression. Food sources for vanadium are parsley, radishes, gelatin, lattice, and lobster.
