A visit to the dentist can be quite scary, especially for kids and even more so who have tooth decay. Many people consider a visit a necessary evil and grit their teeth and bear it. Everyone has practical knowledge on how to prevent tooth decay, but rarely think about it on a day to day basis and do not do enough to prevent it.

What Is Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth which makes acid that slowly corrodes away at a tooth. This can be really very painful and is prone to infection that can result in loss of tooth, if not treated properly.

What Causes Tooth Decay?
A sticky substance plaque forms on the teeth and gums, this plaque contains bacteria. Today’s food is high in sugars and the plaque together causes the bacteria to release acid. This acid reacts with the teeth over a period of time, leads to the gradual destruction of the tooth causing tooth decay.

Symptoms Of Tooth Decay
There are no symptoms of tooth decay. Whenever there is decay, it gets quite uncomfortable to eat or drink anything very cold or hot. This is followed by toothache and the onset of cavities.

How To Prevent Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay can be avoided by maintaining proper dental hygiene; some of the tips given below can also prevent the onslaught of decay and cavities.

Brushings after every meal
Flossing at least 2 times a day
Visiting the dentist often and avoid oral and dental problems
Healthy eating i.e. avoid foods that have high sugars

Treatment For Tooth Decay
Tooth decay or cavities can be treated by visiting the dentist and getting the cavities filled using fluoride. If the decay is severe then root canal treatment or use of the crown may be recommended by the dental care provider.
Make a visit to the dentist a regular affair, read up on dental care and know how to prevent tooth decay and other dental problems.
