Nightshade Vegetables Not the Adversary to Ill Health

Nightshade vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes and peppers are not the bullies out to ruin your health as the scandal around them would like you to believe. You may not realize it but many of use eat these vegetables in our diets.

The Salicaceae commonly referred to as nightshade belong to the family of flowering plants from perennial and annual herbs, shrubs, trees and more and include important medical plants and spices. Stems from most nightshade are not consumable and are poisonous giving them dreadful notoriety. They have also been associated to a host of health problems. In reality they are nutritious and have a wealth of health benefits including the following.

Banana Peppers

Banana peppers are sweet and like their counterpart their hot. These peppers are great for dieting since they are low in calories only 33 in pepper, loaded with vitamins and minerals. And like its cousins it contains Capsicum.

According to the American Diabetes Association In 2012, 86 million Americans age 20 and older had pre-diabetes. Researchers from University of Pecs, Hungary conducted one of the first important studies that looked at capsicums effect on insulin metabolism in 2006. Among participants that had taken 75g of glucose with a onetime oral dose of 400 mcg supplementation of capsicum. Researchers had noted the evidence suggest capsicum provides a valid and valuable intervention to maintain stable blood-glucose levels.
US researchers had provided participants with topical does of five to 10 percent capsaicin for neuropathic pain disorders (in chest or foot) who did not respond to conventional pain medications. Nine out of the 10 participants had reported pain relief that lasted for one to 18 weeks.

Cayenne Pepper

Acute and chronic exposure to sun rays promotes premature skin aging. Ferulic acid as an important antioxidant can preserve the integrity of cells exposed to UV radiation. Ferulic acid has a wide range of therapeutic effects. It has anti-carcinogenic potential that is more effective as a cancer preventative agent. Datil Chili Peppers provides the heat of Habanero peppers but is actually sweet and fruity. Datil chili peppers like all of its cousins contain capsaicin. Burning mouth syndrome is a burning sensation of the tongue, lips or entire oral cavity. Researchers examined the effectiveness of topical capsaicin in an oral rise to improve symptoms of burning mouth syndrome. A double-blind cross-over study consisted of 30 patients with burning mouth syndrome. Capsaicn oral rinse had improved symptoms of burning mouth syndrome on a average of seven days. The study was published in Medicina Oral Patologia v Cirugia Bucal, July 15, 2011.


Eggplant contains many vitamins and minerals and phytonutrients that have antioxidant activity. Laboratory animals with high cholesterol that received eggplant juice had lower blood cholesterol, cholesterol in the artery walls and aortas. The walls of their blood vessels relaxed in which improved blood flow. Anthocyanin phytonutrient found in eggplant skin called nasunin has been shown to protect cell membranes for damage. In animal studies it protects fats in cell membranes.

Jalapeno Peppers

The seeds of the jalapeno give the heat but the skin is mild. Capsaicin found abundant in pepper like jalapeno could reduce blood pressure in hypertensive rats. Researchers from Third Military Medical University in Chongqing, China had found long-term dietary consumption of capsaicin allows blood vessels to relax reducing blood pressure. The study appeared in Cell Metabolism August 4, 2010. Americans use to have a diet rich in potassium but with the increased consumption of processed food potassium in the body is now low. Processed foods remove the potassium. High potassium lowers blood pressure. Increasing potassium intake reduces mortality from cardiovascular disease according to Beneficial effect of Potassium on Human Health published August 2008.


Paprika from the chili pepper family and is rich in beta carotene that has been shown when taken orally in supplementation for 12 weeks reduced UV induced reddening of the skin. Beta carotene possess photoprotective properties to protect against UV light according to research in Dermato- Endocrinology, July 1, 2012. Paprika high in vitamin A in which studies have shown eye drops of vitamin A are effective to get relief from dry eyes.


Pimentos are filled of vitamins and amino acids. Pimiento peppers contain around 163 mg of vitamin C which taken in high consumption has been associated to reduce various types of cancer including prostate, pancreatic and liver noted by the National Cancer Institute. Substantial evidence promotes the use of vitamin A as a preoperative nutritional supplement. Sweet Peppers

Sweet peppers cover a wide variety of mild peppers of the capsaicin family usually referred to as bell peppers. These peppers contain over 30 different carotenoid nutrients. A study from Spain the bell pepper contained 12 percent of total zeaxanthin one of the most common carotenoid alcohols in participant’s diets and also provided seven percent of total vitamin C intake.

Thai Pepper

Thai pepper called birds eye pepper found in Southeast Asia belonging to the capsaicin family provide pain relief and has been used to prevent the formation of blood clots, helps headaches and migraines and help to clear congestion by making you sweet and causes runny noses.


Lxocarpalactone-A found in tomatillo have anti-cancer prosperities. A study published in the FEBs Journal found the chemicals in tomatillos including lxocarpalactone may have cancer chemopreventive properties. These findings were published November 20, 2006.

Hungarian Wax Peppers

These peppers are found in Hungry resembling a banana pepper.
